Default Grizzly bear kills two people in Banff National Park

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...anff-1.6983944

Quote:
A grizzly bear attacked and killed two people in Banff National Park west of Sundre, Alta., on Friday night, Parks Canada says.

Parks Canada received an alert from a GPS device in the Red Deer River Valley west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch west of Sundre at about 8 p.m. on Friday, indicating a bear attack, said Natalie Fay, external relations manager for the Banff field unit.

In a statement, Fay said a team specially trained in wildlife attacks was immediately mobilized, but weather hindered their response time.

"Weather conditions at the time did not allow for helicopter use, and the response team travelled through the night to the location by the ground," she said.

"The response team arrived on-site at 1 a.m. and discovered two deceased individuals."

Saw a big Grizz yesterday in Waterton and was thinking man would not want to get attacked by one of those beasts.

Awful way to go, sad for the bear too.

Sad in multiple ways. You hate to see a beautiful animal put down when it was acting naturally in its own environment but two people list their lives (and their dog, apparently).

I think it’s fine and not really sad to kill a bear that has killed multiple people and poses a threat to the rescue/recovery operation.

I wouldn't sat it's wrong per say for the rangers to kill a dangerous bear, but surely we should count this incident as a tragedy for the bear as well. They were in their habit not ours, their life ended as a result of human encroachment.

This is ####ing ridiculous and so disrespectful to the humans with families who just violently lost their lives.

"A tragedy for the bear." What the hell are you talking about? What about the deer, moose, elk and dozens of other animals hunters kill every year that would never even contemplate eating...EATING...a human. Is it a tragedy whenever we kill one of those, too? Maybe you just don't even understand what the word 'tragedy' means? FFS. I've seen more sympathy for this ####ing bear today online than for the people.

It's absurd. And it's not just their habitat. It's ours, too. We're allowed to exist.

Dude, nobody here is showing more sympathy for the bear. It's ok to think the bear needed to be put down and also think it's tragic. You should see the huge difference between an elk that is killed for its meat and this situation.

We also don't know what the people were doing when they were attacked. We've all seen people harass wildlife and hopefully that isn't the case this time. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say their deaths are tragic too, and I feel for their families.

to be clear, not downplaying the loss of human life, sympathetic to all parties involved. It's a privilege to go into the backcountry, but we should respect that is the domain of wildlife, humans are the guests.

If you are killing the bear to get a human dead body out of the back country I think that would be wrong.

The bear needed to be destroyed because it has found out that humans are a defenseless source of food.

And because it posed a thread to the recovery team.

If a bear poses a serious threat to people, it should be put down immediately. Animals die all the time from interactions with predators higher on the food chain. The only tragedy outside of the people who lost their life is that the couple weren’t able to put the bear down first.

I propose a third alternative.

Nobody wins.

It definitely is a tragedy for those people, no question.

Its also a shame to kill an animal for following its nature upon which we intruded.

The vast majority of the time this isnt an issue. This time it was and that makes it a giant s### sandwich and everyone has to take a bite.
