3 years in.....rank Brian Burke's tenure with the Flames
Hi all,
It has been 3 years now that President Brian Burke was hired for the Flames and I am wondering what the CP thoughts were on his tenure with the Flames?
Personally I think this particular role has been a great one for him and I think he has done a good job as President. A few friends and fans I have talked about are a little disappointed with the lack of overall success the team has had under his guidance. I remember the excitement a lot of people had when he was hired and I heard from many that he was "A top 3 GM" or a perennial "winner"
What type of length of time would ownership keep Burke around for? I believe I had read at a few different articles that he doesn't officially have a contract for a specific length with the Flames, more of an open-ended agreement. I believe when he was with the Leafs his salary was approx $3 mil a year, anybody want to take a guess what his salary could be for the Flames??

If anybody knows how to start a poll for this thread, go ahead and get one going. I tried doing a search but I couldn't figure it out.
Thanks!

Besides his annoying quotes to the media and his tie, I think he's doing a good job.

He fired Feaster and hired BT which certainly looks like a promising move. I give that a B+ and trending higher. Certainly his most significant accomplishment.
His moves as GM?
Trading Berra for a 2nd? A
Re-signing Stajan? D
Getting zilch for Cammalleri? F
Does he have some responsibility for the current state of the scouting department and farm system? IDK, but both appear solid, maybe not spectacular.
I really don't like his bombastic media quotes. But is he a steadying influence on a young GM? Maybe.

I have to rank Brian Burke?
OK then... Brian Burke is easily the best person named Brian Burke in the Flames' organization.
1. Brian Burke

Hiring Treliving looks to be a great move so as far as I'm concerned he's done a great job.
It's hard though to understand how much his role has influenced things like perception around the league of the Flames brass and the leaders now in the organization.
Rebuilding perception around the NHL of the Flames and optics are the real reason Burke was hired and hard for us fans to measure I think.

Re: lack of success ... he came in early during the rebuild so those fans expecting success over the past few years were expecting too much. I feel he has done a fine job so far and, as he said in the beginning, has basically stayed out of the limelight for the most part. The BT hiring was, IMO a great hire and I think we will start to see results real soon.
I am quite happy with our progress.

We really don't know what he does behind the scenes so it's pretty hard to judge how good of a job he is doing.

I don't think you rate the team president by on ice success - that's the domain of the GM and the coaching staff.
For me, the president is about organizational depth, reputation, quality of the management, etc.
And on all those fronts, I think he is doing a great job.

From what I can gather Burke is essentially the phone line between hockey operations and ownership, a simple but big role. Treliving is able to focus 100% on running the team while Burke is the intermediary, Murray Edward and the owners are very hands on so I'd imagine this free Brad up quite a bit.
Also he's the overseer of it all, Treliving runs the team but Burke has a voice and his years of experience and almost endless contacts in the hockey world has surely helped a brand new General Manager.

Hard to say since we don't have a clear idea of what it is he does exactly, but. since he's been here not much has happened that I disagree with so I'd say he's doing a good job

D for his stint as GM.
For his roles as President of Hockey Ops, I'd say "?". Brad Treliving was a good hire, but I don't know what goes on.

I like that we don't hear from Ken King all that much when it comes to hockey operations.

I believe in the Jays.

Who knows.
I don't think we even know what a President of Hockey Ops actually does. He hired Brad Treliving which has been good, his tenure in full decision making (which I'll limit to what he did as interim GM and that draft (which he was probably in charge of since Treliving was such a recent hire at the time) he'll get an "D", I'll also give him an "F" for his media appearances (I find Burke obnoxious and annoying... always have) and for shilling CalgaryNext.

It freed up Mr. King to look at revising the jersey and working on a proposal for CalgaryNEXT
