Or a couple nice coats should have been made.

Resident 'tree hugger' here. I have no problems with how this was handled. Did it go down perfectly? Obviously not. But I do believe the officers and those in charge made the right decisions. Sometimes bad stuff just happens.
This was outside a fricken hospital. Much larger concerns than the welfare of the aninal. While very sad, it's just one of those things.

While I'm not a fan of speaking for people, I can say with reasonable certainty nobody here likes it. It absolutely sucks, but sometimes the hard decision is the right one.

The comments sections on the articles relating to this are utterly mind blasting.
I almost really want a Cougar to maul and kill someone so we can see the hypocritical reaction of the people attacking these officers. Almost.... but not quite.

Not gonna lie, I feel like I lost a few brain cells reading the tripe from the comment section. My own fault though, since it was pretty much expected nothing but dumb comments, but I guess I'm just a sucker for punishment.

Killing it was the right call, but why the delay in between shots when it was clearly still alive?

I'm late for this party and haven't read the whole thread(seems full of dumb food jokes) but can I ask why the hell a cougar was at a hospital? Big cats (or even bobcats/lynx) never go near busy human places especially during daylight.
Was it injured or something and needed attention?

It's near the edge of town. Not really much around it so he probably just wandered in

I think the point is that better cuts of meat have a high percentage of fat. Add to that the muscle is likely well toned as well, it would be tougher than the worst cuts of horse meat.
However the bigger tragedy is that the animal had to be put down; not that the meat was wasted.

I can't tell if this post is serious, or, ironically, a dumb joke...

YAH, IT SHOULD GO TO SEE A VET OR SUMPTIN, TSSSSSSSSSS.
It would have followed the river somehow. My Aunt lives south off Dunbow Rd (humble brag) and cougars have been seen out there. One went on a killing spree one time mauling numerous llamas. It got put down because of its odd and unusual behavior, fish and game decided that it was killing for fun, and not for food.

I have a hard time believing you have been hunting long if you think a head shot would be the right plan of action. Unless of course the hunting you are talking about is the Big Buck Hunter machine at Chuck e Cheese.
And there is no more foolproof or effective gun at that distance than a shotgun. They were not killing this thing to eat it or stuff it. They had to use the most effective, and high percentage means to kill the animal. The animal suffering a few extra seconds in this scenario is not a consideration unfortunately. And that is exactly what was done. Textbook.
|
The head was a lot easier to shoot at than the heart from where the cougar was laying. You say the head is a small target. Compare it to the size of a cougars heart.....
Believe whatever you want, I'm 37 years old now. They should have used a rifle, not a shotgun.

One to the lungs/heart area to debilitate it, then an easy one to the head. If you're a really good shot then one to the heart and done. 10 seconds of suffering tops. Could be minutes or hours of suffering if you go straight for the head
|
I should have multi-quoted, but again the heart wasn't even an option with a cat in grass like it was IMO. Maybe from the window where the people were, but definitely not from where the cops were standing.

He said he didn't believe I was hunting long, my original post had the age I started hunting, that post has my age now. Not sure how you misinterpreted it, but that's all I meant.
