Default ISIS militants attack and take over Iraqi northern city of Mosul

Hey guys,

Just sitting in a hotel after getting evac'd from site about 30km from Mosul. It's getting a bit hectic here at the moment but I thought I would start this thread as a way to pass the time while we wait to see how this latest development will affect us here in Kurdistan.

http://m.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-27778112

This link gives a decent update on what's going on at the moment.

There doesn't seem to be much fear in Erbil (60 kms from Mosul and 35 kms from the latest militant attack). But we sit and wait to hear how far ISIS is willing to push the Iraqi and Kurdish militarized.

Some pretty terrible stories coming out of the affected areas, 20 people killed in an Ariel attack of what I can only assume was a military response from Iraq.

120 people died about 2 days ago when the Syrians first broke the border and hit Mosul's outskirts.

Interesting, keep us updated.

This was bound to happen sooner or later. The US successfully weakened Iraq to the point that it will continually have to deal with this stuff until it can be built into a regional power again.

In what capacity are you there, Wastedyouth? (if you don't mind my asking).

I'm not getting worked up at this point. I've been through this before when I worked near Bagdad last year.

The Kurdish militia won't let them into Erbil, so as long as we remain within the city I should be fine.

Not that I am looking to make light of the situation but I came in totally expecting an Archer reference.

Hopefully it doesn't get any worse. Stay safe over there.

Thanks for the update. My cousins moved to Erbil a few years ago for work and keep telling me it is safe. Hopefully the violence stays out of Kurdistan.

Apparently I'm headed out to site again tomorrow. Armoured vehicles and flak jackets. Seems like an unnecessary risk to me at this point, but duty calls.

If I don't update, assume the worst!

Haha, kidding. :S

I think our company will pull out if it gets declared, the only issue is I have to stick around till Monday at the earliest waiting on an exit visa for one of my Pakistani employees.

Might make for an interesting weekend around these parts.

Best of luck to ya, wastedyouth. Not sure I would be nearly as casual as you seem if I were in that situation.
Hope all goes well for your exit.
