Flames sign Ollas Mattsson to 1 year AHL deal
Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
#Flames prospect Adam Ollas Mattsson has been signed to one-year #AHL contract.
Interesting not a NHL ELC, but at least he will play in NA this season.

Awesome. AOM looked great during scrimmage and I think he gets left out when we talk about Flames prospects.

So this is just for saving a year on an ELC and a contract spot?

He's one of our only "defensive dmen" prospects, but looked excellent in that role.
In Caged's videos for development camp last year, I believe he was the only one to stop Jankowski with authority in the 1 on 1 drills when Janko was playing like a man possessed. Think he did it twice too.

It doubt it is about saving a year on an ELC.
If he signs an ELC before December 31st it will be a 3 year ELC. If he signs after December 31st, it will be a 2 year ELC.
Think the Flames are giving him a chance to prove he is worth an ELC.
Could also be some family issues at home, his Father is a single parent (Mom died of cancer a few years ago) raising a special needs son. Might be a try out on his end to see how the family stuff plays out with him in NA.

Flames certainly being a lot more stingy with ELC's lately it seems. First letting Falkovsky loose, and now this.
A lot better idea IMO than signing a guy like Keegan Kanzig to an ELC 6 months after you drafted him 67th overall, then have it slide for two seasons before he finally turns pro, only to have him play more ECHL games than AHL games....like seriously WTF was that?
More on topic, hopefully Mattsson, proves himself worthy, and the next contract he signs does end up being an NHL ELC.

I've always kind of felt good about AOM. Like he could be a dark horse to turn into a 5-6 guy.

Kerr makes an interesting point, but I find myself doubting that Sweden can't find 8 or more d-men in their own league better than AOM.
Rob Kerr @FAN960RKerr
Probably out there, but an #AHL deal makes him #Olympic eligible.

We are a little short of defencemen for the AHL with only 6 on two way contracts and as it stands, two will play for the Flames.

Here's what I said about him in April when he did a PTO in Stockton. I probably only saw him in a game or two so take that for whatever little it's worth:

He was drafted out of Europe in 2014, so the Flames hold his rights until June 1, 2018. If he's unsigned by then, he'll be a UFA on July 1.
