There's going to be way more delays, but hopefully not overbooking will help with it.

I really doubt they're going to start at $10,000 whenever someone needs to be bumped. More likely you start down at like $500 and climb from there.

I bet this also means they simply sell less seats beyond their capacity since buying the seats back will cost more now.

It might marginally move the needle on the optimum number of seats but I bet it would be a rare occurrence to need more than 1000 cash per seat to get volunteers. For a family of four a one day bump could pay for half their vacation. I don't see it ever getting above 2k before people are running to the gate to be bumped.

A game of chicken between your fellow passengers. How long to do you hold out before somebody snags that sweet cash before you decide to give in.

If you're willing to completely cancel your trip, that's where the real money is and how Delta guy got up to $11k for his family of 4.

This is what is going to happen. But what will be interesting for me is to see how this affects on time performance. The longer passengers hold out (ie the higher the auction price goes) the longer the flight will be delayed. Maybe it won't add up to much overall but a lot of oversold flights that lead to longer departure delays might have a ripple effect across the system.

They could do it like "The Price Is Right". tell everyone on the plane to write down their price and pick the 4 people closest to $1 without going over (figuratively speaking).
Sure, a lot of people would start at $10k, but you would have some people undercutting to get chosen.

My guess is 10-20 million. Not enough to really hurt United, but more than enough for the guy to live out the rest of his life in comfort.

O'Hare and the City are probably the bigger culprits, but United has more motivation to turn the page.

10 would be the absolute high IMO
My guess:
$1 million for physical trauma(assuming full recovery)
$1 million for the embarrassment
$1 million for missing his flight
$5 million to settle and STFU, thus keep it away from the courts and negative press.
Cool $8 million and he would do it again for less!

United got off easy. Even if it was $10M that's nothing to them. I was hoping it would go to trial and their name would be in the media daily

I don't think any company rolls over and gives away millions of dollars that quickly.

If this goes to court then every time something comes up it becomes news again. The memes start up, and it continues to be bad press for them. So I could see that they would want to put this to rest quickly and quietly.
It's also possible that Dao had a reasonable request for settlement, and they just agreed. Maybe even upped the amount for a non-disclosure clause.

And being 69 years old, that money is worth more to him sooner rather than later. Both sides had motivation to settle fast.

I think your second point is bang on "reasonable request for settlement". I don't think any company would view millions of dollars as "reasonable".

On 660 news they had speculated the settlement would have been in the 3-4 million range.
