How long does the vaccine last? I got it like 16ish years ago?
Also, #### YOU to the parents who don't vaccinate their kids.

Time to head over to WebMD and figure out what the symptoms for measles are.
I was in an elevator yesterday with a woman who sneezed. I might be infected.

Speaking as someone who had (well, my wife did most of the work) a baby two months ago, this makes me angry. My kid can't get vaccinated for measles until he's 12 months, but would be safe until then if everyone else got vaccinated.
Also, I'm annoyed about the vaccination process. I called two days after he was born, and the first day they had available for him to get his 2 month shots was after he'll be 3 months old. Since they need an alberta health card to book, I don't think you can book before birth.

If you got two immunisations, you're good to go.
If anyone wants to check their immunisations, just call health link and they can bring it up for you.

The other problem with an outbreak is that a lot of people who get infected with measles will be people who are vacinated.
If 10% of people succeptable get measles and 80% are vaccinated and 20% aren't and the vaccine is 80% effective then the resuling infection profile for Vacinated getting infected is .8*.2*.1 or 1.6% of people in general will be infected with measles and vaccinated. For the unvaccinated you would get .2*.1 or 2% of people.
So for Anti Vaxers the story will be half of the people infected got vaccinations and half didnt get vaccinations so vaccinations don't really work completely ignoring the population size of the two groups. I am will to bet we see these types of numbers floating around facebook in the next month.

It's pretty crappy the system they have now. We used to book our kids next shots after their appointments but they won't let you book more than 4ish weeks in advance now. Brutal. Also Adults need a MMR booster (2nd shot).

It was probably meningitis. Were you at the UofC between 2000 and 2006? I was forced to get a shot sometime during my time at UofC as well and I believe it was meningitis.

I thought even as an adult you need a booster every 10 years.
Or maybe I'm just thinking of a tetanus shot.

Already have - got into a debate over this just a couple of days ago. "It's all the vax'd people who have it! They're spreading it to US!" Yeah, whatever nutbar.

I assume that only works if it was done in Alberta?

Above is the best explanation for people using real numbers and cases and not getting to mathy on them. It won't convince nut bars but it helps rational people trying to wade through the crap.

Anyone who went to UofA in 2007-2008 ish, if you got a shot then during mass immunizations it was likely the MMR shot. There was an outbreak of mumps I think.

Interesting read in the Herald today about how after their last measles outbreak Quebec pushed the vaccine hard and got the rate over 95%, and now they have no cases. Meanwhile there are 300 cases centred around a BC religious community that doesn't believe in vaccination. But no, it's just sanitation leading to lower rates now than in the past.
