This video reinforces my belief that the original six is nothing but a bogus marketing scam by the NHL.
I never understood why they call the original six teams original when they weren't. It's kind of like saying Polish and Ukrainian farmers were the original people to settle the prairies.
Yeah, what actually did prompt them to coin the original six? It clearly wasn't, and judging by that timeline even seems a little random.
Was it maybe a point of stability for the league and they didn't want to have some crappy, flaky teams/markets known as originals when history looked back on the league?
"The NHL consisted of ten teams during the 1920s, but the league experienced a period of retrenchment during the Great Depression, losing the Pittsburgh Pirates/Philadelphia Quakers, Ottawa Senators/St. Louis Eagles, and Montreal Maroons in succession to financial pressures. The New York/Brooklyn Americans – one of the league's original expansion franchises, along with the Bruins and Maroons – lasted longer, but played as wards of the league from 1936 onward. World War II its own economic strains and also severely depleted the league's Canadian player base, since Canada entered the war in September 1939 and many players left for military service. The Americans suspended operations in the fall of 1942, leaving the NHL with just six teams.
Despite various outside efforts to initiate expansion after the war, including attempted revivals of the Maroons and Americans franchises, the league's membership would remain at six teams for the next twenty-five seasons."
"The term was not used during the era, having originated after 1967 expansion. Only Montreal and Toronto are actual original charter members of the NHL in 1917, but all six joined the NHL in the league's first decade, and are commonly considered as a traditional set."

Some of the logo changes are off by like five+ years.

Well it was 25 years, and had some of the biggest stars of any era. Name might not be totally accurate but it's not far off. Seems to me like Keith Olberman was trying to sound like he knows what he's talking about by doing a pedantic piece on NHL's golden age.

The Original Six is the beginning of the modern NHL, starting in 1942, with sole contention for the cup in 47. These six teams remained until expansion 1967
Obviously several teams existed and fell before this time, but the dawn of the NHL as we know it today was the six teams in 1942, thats why its called the original six

Wow almost all the old logos look better than the new ones. Especially, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Tampa, Boston, St. Louis and even the ducks. Heck, I prefer the old Colombus one too.
