Regarding #Flames D Mark Cundari's 1-year, 2-way deal valued at $660K in the NHL, he'll need to clear waivers to be assigned to Adirondack.

Kidding. Cundari struck me as a 'tweener or an AHL veteran. It's good to have his depth when some of the kids are still developing. He's not too shabby offensively and uses his size well enough, but doesn't seem to have the brain of an NHLer. Still useful to have around though.

I like Roy better than Cundari for offensive defenseman, but Cundari is on that cusp right now of either graduation to the big times or hitting his ceiling as a pro. I'm hoping last season was an off year for Cundari or simply a poor relationship with Ward. Or maybe he was focused on his defensive game and needed the ice time to do it.
Obviously this is a good deal, as we don't want to throw away and asset and he still has potential but I have a hard time seeing Cundari being apart of our long term plans. If we had prospect depth at defence like we do at forward, I have my doubts he would even be offered a contract.

I wonder if its so that there's the image that the Bouwmeester and Iginla trades weren't a wash. Why was Hanowski signed, given our prospect depth at forward?

I can't see that being the case. The new management group has no incentive to make the previous group's trades look good. I'm sure this was strictly a hockey decision.

He put up decent enough numbers as an AHL rookie to get another contract, imo.
If we have lots of forwards prospects better then Hanowski then it wont really matter as they'll get more playing time if they deserve it.

I could see cundari as a dark horse to have a really good training camp and make the team. Seems to be written off by a lot of people but he had some good potential when first acquired.

Just curious, as I can't remember. Was hanowski signed by Feaster or burke/trelieving?
Feaster. He came over in the Iginla trade and was signed after his NCAA year was over. His most recent contract however was offered by Treliving/Burke.

Farm team needs players too. Hanowski has a history of being a leader in college, so positive attitude and good teammates are never bad in a development league.
