Legally blind Flames fan watches an NHL game for the first time
https://www.nhl.com/news/blind-flame...?tid=281396148
[QUOTE]Olivia sat on the Flames bench during the pregame warmup, and after the game she got to meet her three favorite players,#Mark Giordano,#Johnny Gaudreau#and#Sean Monahan.
"I'm most excited for meeting the players," Olivia told Calgary Metro before watching the Flames defeat the New York Islanders 5-2 for their seventh straight victory. "I'm going to be thinking about how cool it is that I can see them.

This is awesome, groundbreaking technology. They should distribute these glasses to the referees as well.

"She got a little teary when she first put them on, and she said, 'Everything is so beautiful,'" her mother, Meredith, told Calgary Metro. "It's the little things, the details that come out because of the glasses, that she's now able to experience."

Just awesome.

I was at that game and the crowd was pretty amazed when they heard her story. Technology has come a long way.

Such a great story.
So does she have some sight but is legally blind? Like the glasses don't circumvent the eyes right? Either way, crazy what they can do these days.

Legally blind means you can not correct the vision past 20/200 with glasses basically.
This device takes a very high resolution video and displays it on two OLED screens in front of the eye with no perceived lag. That is the breakthrough part. I have tried devices previously that caused naseau and had big delays. Which made motion hard. The other breakthrough Is being able to quickly adjust focus for different distances. In past you would need to manually adjust focus. Which also makes it difficult to move around and do things.
Not knowing any specifics of Olivia's case. It is probably a loss of her central
Vision. If you magnify the video enough you can put the image outside of the impacted area.

sounds like she can see, but very very poorly. the glasses basically use HD feeds and bring them right in front of her eyes, so she can see it.
It's a nice story. Glad for her. I'm also glad that Sportsnet was not running her HD feed...

Great story. She was so appreciative of getting up close and personal with the Flames. It is also obvious that the Flames players are inspired by the strong spirits of kids like Olivia.

I thought it was cool how she was fist bumping the players as they were coming out onto the ice with that huge smile on her face.
Awesome story, awesome tech.

That little miracle of a girl is my niece.
She's remarkable, I've never heard her complain once.
She's a blissful blend of sweetness & piss and vinegar.
Kind. Sweet. Loves animals.
Observing how the Flames are an asset to community far exceeds 82 games on an inch of ice. They seek opportunities to help others.
Her eyesight immediately went from seeing moving, fuzzy shapes on ice, to asking why #19 passed to the other team in the far corner.
