Should the Flames bring back Versteeg?
I wanted to gauge the community's opinion on this topic. I know there are many posters with strong opinions on Versteeg, and I'd be interested to see how many people would take him back next season.
(If a mod could create a poll here, that would be great)
Kris Versteeg | 2016-17
(numbers in parentheses are how the preceding figure ranks on the Flames)
Games Played: 53 (15th)
Goals: 11 (7th)
Assists: 13 (10th)
Points: 24 (9th)
Goals/GP: 0.21 (4th)
Points/GP: 0.45 (7th)
PPG: 6 (1st)
FO%: 53.0% (2nd)
Salary: $950,000
Would you bring back Versteeg? How much money and how much term would you give him?

For the same salary or less, yes. For more, no.

He's been useful at times. But also has gone through lulls. I'm happy to bring him back but not fussed if they don't.

I think he might get snatched up by the Golden Knights.

Unless they can upgrade somehow, they kind of have to. He's a decent winger with chemistry with other guys. If they could somehow get a kid like Kane to replace him, it would be great but it isn't that easy.

Depends on money and term but yes I would like to see him back. I think he plays a valuable roll on the team especially with all the youth that we have.

Wow people sure expecting a lot here. Getting him on a deal for around 1.5 would be a steal. Filling the roster with cheap players who have flashes of talent is what you need to build winners.

Personally, I'd bring Versteeg back on a 2-year deal for $1.5-2 million per. Wouldn't kill the books, and would allow room for Bennett/Tkachuk extensions in a couple years.

He's been invaluable to the powerplay. People pay "PP specialists" much more than we're paying Versteeg. Probably one of the better value contracts on the flames right now and if he keeps it up, I would like him back

Given Treliving's track record of "always earned never given" with our prospects and the fact that Versteeg has many ties to Southern Alberta.
I think we sign him for one more year at 1-1.2 million. Too many injuries for 2 year deal.
Klimchuk and Shinkaruk are close. Lets see if they can earn a spot over Versteeg next year. I doubt it.
If they do outplay him for spot, Versteeg liked gets taken on waivers at his salary and value.
His right shot is also valuable to Flames.

He has been an important player for the team in turning around their PP when they moved to the umbrella. Bring him back for a million or million and a half for next year.

There are bound to be some upgrades out there that we should target. I wouldn't rush to sign him on July 1st anyway.
There are always filler types around these days when training camps open. I wouldn't be too afraid of not being able to find a replacement.
Don't forget, Versteeg was a camp invite this year for the Oilers before we signed him. Before that, he was trying to sign in Switzerland. He had an OK season as a depth player, but isn't replaceable by any means.

1 Year 1-1.2 Million. Depth guy at a cheap price that is how you build contending teams.

We are going to get pretty good deals on Bennett, Ferland and Lazar on bridge deals, so yeah I'd bring Versteeg back on a short term deal as well. Versatile player and can easily fit him in.
Plus he brings some offense and skill with a right hand shot, which we don't have a lot of at this point.

You get him on a 2 by 2 max, id say it's a win. A bit less of a salary than Bouma for a guy who has flashes of talent and huge on our PP, hell yes.

I would like to see Phillips in the AHL taking Mangipane's spot as Mangiapane comes up and takes Versteeg's spot. Don't know if that's possible but I would like to see more graduating from the farm to the big club if the player shows they can handle it.
Is it even possible?

Yeah I'd definitely bring him back if it is at a reasonable amount and term. A great secondary scoring guy who has cup winning experience.
Can slot up and down the lineup. Great value on his current deal.

Hard to say, I think if we are able to have Brouwer claimed by LV then we could bring him back but for specifically a 1 year deal.

I'd be open to it - but it wouldn't be a priority this summer. If we can't find an upgrade on the position, then yeah - circle back on Versteeg and see if he can't be had for a similarly cheap 1 year deal.
