This leaves Tampa Bay with ~$5M in Salary Cap space.
UFAs: Stamkos, Duclair, Dumba, Motte
RFAs: No one of consequence

Why would Tampa take on another huge salary?

Lightning were one of those teams interested in Hanifin, so they had identified a gap on their defense. Looks like they plug it with a familiar face

McDonagh is a very solid defencemen. Tampa obviously not ready to tear it down, which makes sense as they still have a lot of solid pieces.

Meh. Tampa seems to have realized they aren't the same teams without their depth. A 35 year old McDonagh is good but not the same player they traded away a couple of years ago.
Tampa needs to keep going for it with Kucherov, Point, Hedman, and Vasilevskiy still in their primes though. The price was definitely right for McDonagh, even if he's not what he once was.

Stamkos. That's what he'll have to agree to in order to get a contract and stay with Tampa like he wants.

Capfriendly has Stamkos’s career earnings at $99.5M - if he really wants to go wire to wire with the Lightning, start signing one year deals under $5M.
He had 81 points this year and he was -21 as a soon-to-be 35 year old.

McDonagh makes 6.75 million... still solid but for a team that's in cap trouble this seems like a bad allocation of resources. Plus he's 35. Weird trade.

Exceptionally so. Maybe they already know they cannot afford Stamkos?

Unless he takes a serious paycut I guess. They have only 10 forwards under contract and five million in space.

Yup, basically have to fill their roster with minimum contract guys.
So, unless they can sign Stamkos for $1M, they will have a similar team to last year, minus Stamkos, all a year older.
And their earliest pick this coming draft is a late 4th rounder.
And they don't have a 1st or 2nd round pick next year.

Pretty awesome comments from Trotz about Mcdonagh. He asked to be traded back to TB if it was ever possible.

Only one of note that would create cap space for them would be Cirelli.

Calgary boy, Brayden Point, would do
Realistically though, I just don't see a trade between CGY and TBL, mostly because of the length of the contracts everyone is signed to.

Pretty sure the Nashville GM has some incriminating photos of the Tampa GM

Why is that?
TB has been lamenting the loss of McDonagh since he left 2 years ago. He was a big cog in their playoff successes over the years. With quite literally almost nothing in the future comin down the pipe, they HAVE to go for it all once again this upcoming season.
By surrendering a 2nd rd pick for a guy that is super popular with team mates, a guy that will fit in immediately, and a guy that plays a role they have no one else to do....i think its a bargain from the TB viewpoint.
Nashville creates a bunch of cap space for a possible Mitch Marner deal maybe? plus adds a late 2nd rd pick.
Win win for both sides and a huge win for the player.
