The Canucks botched this one big time.
They should have played Schneider more last year, to truly test him. Instead Schneider puts up his usual great backup numbers, and then gets a multi-year deal based on a 1/2 a good playoff series. They then should have moved Luongo last year.
The clear choice for an aging team is to go with who is best now, which is now Luongo. The problem is they've now severely devalued what was once a top end asset in Schneider. Now Schneider is an average goalie signed for 3 more years. Awful asset management.
Gillis might be one of the worst GMs in the league. He was handed an all star core. Since then he's messed up big time, with:
1) The above dueling goalies scenario. Which might be okay, if they didn't have a combined 9+ milion cap hit.
2) Bringing in Ballard, Garrison, and Booth at 4+ million each.
3) Re-signing Burrows. The guy turns 32 in less than a month. Next year he starts a 4 years extension at a 4.5 cap hit. He's an aging and secondary player.
4) Hodgson for Kassian. Kassian is not that good.
The Canucks are a worse team. They now have no cap room to move. Even if they can buyout/move several of the above, they will end up filling their positions with players on a league minimum.
