Default Codec help

Here's the situation. I have a CD with a bunch of videos, and for no apparent reason about half just won't play. I get an error message that says the Codec could be different or something like that. Then reading on the windows site they talk about being careful about what you download and offer no real links to help with the problem!

So is there some kind of package that just covers basically every Codec? I just want to play the rest of these videos. I'm a little surprised that the format is different for them, but who knows. It could also be that its not the Codec issue, but I figure if I loaded a full package and they don't work I can cross that off the list.

Tried VLC? Never saw anything it couldn't play.

Haven't installed a codec pack in probably 4-5 years.
