HA HA flames were out of the running from the start. Have to give it to Edmonton they sure have luck on their side when it comes to draft.

I think I'll forever be bitter they got McDavid. Rewarded with the crown jewel of prospects while activity ruining hockey.

If they got Matthew's I would have lost it.

I didn't know the playoff format was so "puzzling".

Combined 54.5% Matthews ends up in Edmonton, Winnipeg, or Columbus.

Arizona needed both guys. It's not really good for the game when two huge hockey markets win the best talents in the league

I'm pretty sure Wayne Gretzky could arrive in Arizona from 1987 in a time machine and they still wouldn't sell enough tickets to survive in that market.

The draft lottery weighting, although improved recently, hasn't made sense since the salary cap and lowered UFA age were brought in. When you get parity from those 2 things, a weighted draft lottery just messes it up.

I know I have been beating this drum for a long time, but now that there is an even economic playing field, rewarding bad teams with the best talent does two things. It either hurts the talent since those teams tend to be terrible at developing players, or they end up with a salary structure that isn't sustainable since drafting in the top 5 for several years will force them to be a top heavy team (which doesn't work in hockey). It's easy enough to say they should just trade those picks for depth, but the cap system has made it more difficult to make hockey trades.

This is why I am not worried about the Oilers long term as they will be dismantling soon.

Give every team an equal chance to win the lottery and then snake each round.

If you're good with your later picks (i.e. Chicago) having a top-heavy team can work. That's the biggest issue, though. Your surrounding cast needs to be young, good and cheap and you have to be able to develop and draft in order to make that possible.

Just create a rule that the same team can't win the lottery for 2 or 3 years after they win it once.

I'm just happy we got Tkachuk, Oilers are so pathetic. So bad the NHL needed to change the rules. Would've been a travesty if they got a top 2 pick even tho they got poolparty who handles the puck like a grenade. I'm sure with Edmontons great ability to develop young players they will fix this

And to think, if Backstrom hadn't beaten his old team and Seiloff hadn't scored his only NHL goal, Laine would be a Flame...

Oilers would have picked Laine if they had first pick.

How does that work? Winnipeg still finished ahead of us?

What's more depressing is that the Flames weren't even in the mix.
