Apparently hundreds of Ukranian soldiers were massacred as they tried to peacefully retreat

Everyone talks about Ukraine's reliance on Russia for natural gas supplies, but it gets nearly all of it's nuclear fuel & equipment from Russia as well, over 20% of their total electricty consumption!

NATO showing some balls for a change.

Quote:
NATO members meeting this week in Wales are expected to create "a very high-readiness force" to deal with Russian aggression in Ukraine and other international conflicts.

we will ensure that the Alliance remains ready, able and willing to defend all Allies against any attack.

We will agree a Readiness Action Plan to make NATO more agile than ever.
The Readiness Action Plan responds to Russia’s aggressive behavior – but it equips the Alliance to respond to all security challenges, wherever they may arise.

This spearhead would be provided by Allies in rotation, and could include several thousand troops, ready to respond where needed with air, sea and Special Forces support.

This will require reception facilities on NATO territory and pre-positioned equipment and supplies, command and control and logistics experts. So this force can travel light, but strike hard if needed.

At the summit, we will meet with President Poroshenko of Ukraine and make clear our support for Ukraine, as it is confronted by Russia’s aggression. We will discuss his reform priorities. And take concrete steps to help Ukraine.
Putin will be pissed if NATO makes Ukraine a member.

This really harkens back to the Cold War with the rapid response forces. It's definitely a step in the right direction and if anything NATO should be parking more troops at NATO nation borders to dissuade Russia from trying anything more than they already have. Though a 4k troop "expeditionary" force like this is not going do much if Russia decides to call in that 25k reserve force at the Ukrainian border. There are already by most estimates up to 2-5k Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

Putin is going bonkers over this move though, today he threatened the head of the European commission saying "If I wanted to I could take Kiev in two weeks"

Quote:
Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a threat to outgoing European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso that he could "take Kiev in two weeks" if he wanted, Italian media reports have said.

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the Russian leader made the belligerent statement in a phone call with the outgoing EU leader, who is set to be replaced by Luxembourg's former prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker.

It looks like Russia has Europe by the balls for energy prices. Check out this map of how Russia leverages countries based on their relationship with Russia through Gazprom.

Probably? it's like the USA saying they could crush Canada if it wanted too. This KGB thug isn't fooling anyone with harsh words.

This is building, I personally would love to see a few of F-22 Raptors buzz a couple of Buk missile systems.

I suspect we'll soon see Putin's tail between his legs.

I literally can't remember ever hearing anyone say that. Sounds like Fox news to me.

To take control of every city, town, the infrastructure and population between Eastern Ukraine and Kyiv would most certainly not be easy. However I do think the Russians could pull it off, which is why I agreed.

I wish there was a practical way for Canada to supply Europe with its natural gas. It would be nice to stick it to Gazprom and Russia in the pocket book.

Considering we can't supply eastern Canada with natural gas practical isn't even a word.
