Nm.

Edit: Was looking at retired Eric staal.

That's actually shocking. Could have had 100 guess and he wouldn't have been one guess.

I don’t really watch the Leafs but is Matthews that good defensively?

Who needs defense when you score 70 goals

Off the top of my head... Barkov, Cirelli and Hintz? Not sure about Hintz, maybe go off the board with Eric Haula or a young guy like Frost or Forester from Philly, who start off a train wreck and then shut it down at the end of the season? I dunno, Matthews is average and Staal is 106 years old and nominated every year.

Barkov in a walk....but Matthews certainly gets to be in the next tier of guys, he is a very good 200' player.

Barkov should be the easy choice here but don't underestimate the power of Toronto media.

Weird picks. Panarin is quietly playing some amazing two way hockey. Barzal, too, frequently overlooked. Torts may not like him, but Couturier had a strong season.

Kopitar would have been a better nominee than Staal.

Staal was -14 on a 111 point team?!

Absolutely. It helps that the other two contestants are a complete joke.

WTF happened to Hockey Writers? I know they've been paring down the industry but maybe we need to eliminate them all and re-start from scratch?

Ron Maclean: "Alright guys we're just going to go into this hockey locker-room, they decorated it like the Leafs' locker room in the '50s when Bear McGillis from Bonavista Newfoundland scored 40 for the Leafs and....why are they welding the door shut from the outside like they did back in '74 when the Hershey Bears were competing for the AHL Cup, it was known as the Soda Bowl back then....does anyone else hear that hissing noise? No matter...."

Don’t forget Friedman cheerleading for Hyman. It’s so gross to watch.

Didn’t ROR have a decent year? Or even Kopitar or Danault?

The top 3 forwards in the entire NHL in +/- were all from the West.
6 of the top 10 were all from the West.

The PHWA voted 0 western players in the top 3.
The PHWA voted for Jordan Staal higher than any player from the West.
The PHWA, throwing defensive play out the window, voted for Mathews' 107pts +31... ahead of MacKinnon's 140pts +35.

There's clearly no Eastern bias, however.

Staal is not a nominee. He finished top 3 in the voting, which is completed.

He was -14 because he played the toughest minutes against the other teams best players.

Reason # 56 why +/- is a flawed stat.
