Bumping this as we’re looking at Direct Energy and Encor by Epcor. DE has a 3-year deal on electricity for 11.79/kWh and gas 4.59/GJ. I don’t have the other in front of me. Any new thoughts or experiences?

Natural gas was $2.19 per GJ to end last month. 11.79 for electricity I think is okay as far as today's rates go. I don't think you need to lock in N.G. right now. I think I've seen fixed N.H. for like $3.79 per GJ.

As long as you can cancel the contract the quoted pricing is fine. Won't be long until the subsidy repayment rolls off and you can go back to the RRO option until the fixed plans come down to something lower.

Floating for gas. There isn't much reason to lock in unless one really can't handle the volatility (which isn't much tbh).

A month ago I had my 5.99 electricity rate expire and had to renew at 11.89... now the renewal is down to 11.29.

I'm not sure why it dropped but reminder to everyone on Enmax to continually check the renewal rates.

It's going to keep dropping. Natural gas prices are low partly because of the mild winter, and that powers a lot of generation. We also have new power plants coming online which will service demand spikes preventing stupid high rates. Once the RRO drops below the fixed rate everyone is probably better to move to Enmax floating electricity if they aren't locked in at a nice rate(I'm at 0.0699 so staying locked for awhile) but just a reminder to watch this over the next year so you don't pay more than necessary if you locked in in the past few years.

Mine is expiring now... Electricity rate that is.

Should I float for a month or two to see if the rates drop even more before locking in ?

I have been floating gas for years.

You can switch between fixed and floating once a month, and floating is still...15c? I think? So I'd just go fixed for a bit(and set a calendar reminder).

I'm in the same boat for the next few days. I'm going to wait until the last day and lock in at 11.29. You can always renew whenever it lowers... just have to check.

Fuzz is bang on and is giving good advice.

The only thing I would add is that the math is pretty easy to do. Just plug in the new rate into the calculation on your bill and you will find out what the difference is. Unless you are using tons of electricity, the change will be quite small as a proportion of your total bill.

I thought the admin fees were different between fixed and floating, because of course they are. How dare you, the consumer, think you have any chance of making the best choice without building your own spreadsheet.

Shouldn't be that extreme. Looks like the market price for Dirct Energy Regulated services price has changed from 2.17 per GJ in Jan to a February price of 4.43. So it's a big spike, but it is coming up from a really low number.

We are about to hedge our electricity at $64.50/MWHr for the next year. So if the guys who actually power trade and forecast are comfortable taking a profit from us at that number.....

Yeah mine was $ 1.619964 / GJ Dec 25 to Dec 31, $ 5.291426 / GJ Jan 1 to Jan 24, wondered what happened as my bill did look a bit big.

Which provider are you with? The monthly price resets at the first of the month. I just looked at

https://www.auc.ab.ca/current-gas-ra...nd-conditions/

The only two variable providers are Direct Energy and Apex Utilities on that. So that does seem a bit out of sorts. I'm with Direct Energy and my bill is exactly for the rates shown for DERS.
