Default Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2017 - Round 9

It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack

Calgarypuck's 5th Annual Prospect Ranking Poll Series

Here are the last 5 years for a quick glance ...
Prospect Rankings
2013 - http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...ospect+Ranking

2016 - http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=156151

As per usual the vote is up to you. Some see it as most likely to play, some see it as highest ceiling, others see it as a mix of both.

Happy voting!

Who will join Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk as the top prospect. Previous four have gone straight to the show.

I came down to Dube, Rittich, Kulak, and Mangiapane.

I don't consider Kulak a prospect anymore as he's pretty much already a 'tweener who could graduate full time this year, but I guess technically he is a prospect.

Rittich had an impressive year, but I've been burned by jumping on the goalie hype train too early in the past. I want to see similar numbers/performance this year before I think he's the real deal.

Mangiapane has done well enough at every level, but I am concerned that he can't handle the size of the NHL.

Dube had another solid season in junior and had an impressive showing at the WJC even if it was as a 4th liner. He was a difference maker. I'm excited to see his progression going forward. Even if he tops out as a 3rd liner, he'll be a quality NHL player.

I went with Dube.

This is where is gets interesting for me. I think the top 8 was pretty clear and was exactly how I voted (except I would have swapped Foo and Fox) but now I can see valid arguments for multiple players.

Went with Dube this round. I think he has the highest ceiling.

Anybody find this year a very different ranking than years past?

Feels like we have a lot of really high potential prospects in large tiers that are difficult to distinguish between.

IMO:
Janko/Parsons as the big 2
Andersson/Valimaki/Kylington/Fox on D
Mangiapane/Dube/Foo on F

Then I remember the wildcards in Kulak and Hathaway (effectively NHLers already) plus names like Rittich, Ollas-Matsson, Phillips which I feel like all have high potential too.

I agree completely. I think it comes down to a better management team executing a better plan. Then spending the necessary assets in order to properly develop the players that show improvement. I'm far more positive about ours prospects than ever before.

Edit: oh I went with eatbread. 20 goals in his first year of pro as others have mentioned, but more importantly in my eyes is that Huska wasn't afraid to use him in all situations. A well rounded game will be his key to making the jump.

Matthew Phillips again. I think people are really under valuing him. 50 goals in any league is amazing.

Counterpoint: guys like Rob Schremp, Steve Ott, and Dave Bolland scored 50 goals in the OHL and looked to have promising careers, only to end up being borderline NHLers. There is a much longer list of prospects in that league who scored 50 and never even had a sniff at the NHL.

The WHL has fewer 50 goal scorers, but those who do it aren't guaranteed success in the NHL or anything. Such standouts as Mitch Holmberg, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Emerson Etem, Brandon Shinnimin, Ty Rattie haven't done anything in the NHL yet. Hell, Hunter Shinkaruk had 49 one year and he's struggling to stay in the AHL long term.

Add to that, Phillips is tiny. I mean smaller than Gaudreau and not on his level for skill. I think he's a long shot to make the NHL for any length of time.

Edit: I forgot to add one of our biggest busts: Ryan Howse; who scored 47 and 51 back to back years. The guy couldn't even hack the AHL for conditioning.

Kulak again for me. Plays arguably the most valuable position in hockey. On the cusp on being an NHLer.

Voted Magiapane by accident. Didn't know Dune was still on the board.

He's got talent, there's no question. But he's small for even an average young man, let alone a hockey player. Unless he hits a sudden growth spurt, he could be one of the smallest players in league history

Kulak for the 4th straight vote. He's gonna surprise some people this year. He's getting compared to Hathaway as far as fringe NHlers but being a #6/7 D at 23 is different then being a #12/13 forward at 25. I think he should at least be in the top 10 but doesn't look like he's going to get enough love.
