I think the Flames could make $3.5M work, $4M seems too high for what we have left to work with when Bennett + Kulak get signed.

$3MM seems to be the number that would work for the Flames. I would prefer Tre structure a deal on that basis, with some bonus clauses for 30 goals or 50 points. And keep it to a one year deal.

That seems like a lot to pay for Jagr. Maybe he won't play for less than x, but I doubt there's a bidding war for him.

Yeah I agree. I think if we sign either Jagr or Iggy it'd be a $1.5-$2M base salary plus some bonuses.

It was ridiculously vague. Like "Flames are moving a defenseman"
I think it was Bartowski

That amount explains why nobody has signed him yet.

Nah I posted that Jokipakka would be traded... it was from a pretty awful source but then four days later he was off to Ottawa

I feel like if that was all he was asking for he could go to pretty much any team he wanted. He got 46 points last year. For 2M you stick Jagr on your 3rd line he is going to do a lot of damage.
1.5-2M is 4th liner money nowadays. Jagr gets at least 3-3.5M for a one year deal.

Sorry, no you didn't. I mean you kinda did but not really to be more precise.
http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...=trade&page=97
You overheard some guy talking about the Flames. That could have been anyone, it could have been me. The discussion was about what "the merits" of trading a bottom pairing guy. You're the one that then used the names Wideman and Jokkipaka (from the post above) on this board. Jokkipakka was traded later. It's strange you bring it up again as anyone with a functioning brain can see it was just a coincidence, and not a spellbounding one either.
It wasn't a rumour to begin with, that's an insult to the word. It was just a conversation then something else happened. We talk about possible moves here all the time, then sometimes those guys are traded. Those aren't rumours.
The fact you continue to claim it as such, tongue-in-cheek or not, is baffling.
And this is from someone who enjoys your posts.

Random question: Let's say I had 4 million that I wanted to spend... Is there anything in the CBA that would say that I couldn't just give that money to Jagr and then he signed with the Flames for the league minimum. In this scenario, I'm just an average fan that isn't affiliated with the team and league in any way.

That would be the textbook definition of cap circumvention. In the old days of the CFL I know that team owners used to sign star players to "special services contracts" that would pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for services like yard keeping or household chores, and then the team would sign the player to a League mandated contract. Those sorts of things are totally illegal.

Yeah this is exactly what boosters have been doing for years. Frankly I'm sure it would be easy enough to circumvent the cap rules doing this. But this seems to be a college sports phenomenon, where there are way too many rich people who seem to care way too much how their college football team does. And although the $'s can get big, I don't think even elite college athletes are getting millions of $'s under the table like this.

Do you think so? I doubt it. The NHL is a pretty small and tightly-knit group. I don't believe something like that would ever fly under the radar, and am fairly sure that it would be nearly impossible to keep confidential.

Nike is doing this with Durant to ensure he stays in golden state for the Nike vs Under Armor shoe war!
Durant takes pay cut to remain with team and let them retain other players. Nike throws another 10 million on his shoe deal !
