Icon35 Islanders trade Stempniak to St. Louis

To St. Louis:

RW Lee Stempniak
2019 2nd-rounder
2020 1st-rounder
$3.99 million for 2017-18

To New York:

D Markus Niemelainen
D Dillon Simpson
2019 3rd-rounder
2020 3rd-rounder

Thanks to DropIt for sticking with me all day today. I think we hammered out a great deal.

The original deal in which I acquired Stempniak was:

2 2nds
2 3rds

for

Stempniak
$6.66 million

So in the end, I got $2.67 million in cap space, two good defense prospects, and two thirds for a first in three years, three seconds (two of which I couldn't use anyway), and two thirds.

Thoughts?

So you gave up 3, 2nds and a first for 2.67 mill in cap space and 2 prospects? Assuming the 2, 3rds cancel each other out.

Essentially, yes. It was the best I could do under the circumstances, and I think I did all right.

St.Louis was happy to add a 3rd line winger for this season at a reasonable cost rather than duel it out in the UFA bidding period.

Also adding a 1st and 2nd round pick in future years should help keep the prospect pipeline flowing rather than stagnating every other season which it seems to be doing now.

Thanks for the deal Scorp

My thoughts? You just did exactly what I said you would need to do in the other thread to dump Stempniak. You had to give up assets to get it done.

My advice for future threads is to not take things personally but to take them for what they are, constructive critisizm.

I wasn't reacting to that advice. I had already begun talks with St. Louis when you posted that. I was reacting to you talking about Paul Martin the way you did, which could have possibly influenced some GMs not to claim him. I guess we'll find out on Wednesday.

So if no one claims him buy him out if u still need cash, he has 1 year left on his deal making that a viable option. Or keep him.

Opportunistic deal for the blues. Sit on Stempniak for a bit and then flip him for more assets.

Smart play by a gm with cap.

As I said earlier, I don't understand the urgency for the islanders. I get the win now and Ufa thing but sometimes the best move is to wait for a market rather then force one. That said, hopefully the cap goes to good use in Ufa and you get the upgrade your looking for, you paid a steep price for the opportunity to bid.

I agree with Turd. I didn't see the urgency.

I also wouldn't buy out Martin to free up 1.5 mill. All you are gonna do with that money is hopefully sign a guy as good as Martin.
