Retirement gift
A friend of mine's Father is retiring, someone who put up with a lot of #### from me and the boys growing up as this was often the party house on account of the pool. I'd like to get him a gift for his retirement party, he loves to BBQ and spends a lot of time entertaining in his back yard which they put a ton of work into so I was thinking somewhere in that area.
The easy out is a bottle of booze, which I know he would enjoy but odds are it just gets drank by someone else the night of the party anyway. Costco had these great cedar BBQ scrapers, but he already has one so that idea sunk. Any ideas?
I don't want to spend a ton as he has really stressed the 'no gifts' mantra and he is the kind of guy that would get mad at you for spending money on him versus just spending time with him. But I still want to get him something. I thought a gift certificate to a restaurant was a decent idea as well..
Any retired guys out there or serial backyard entertainers with a great idea that comes to mind?

Get him something personalized. Even if it's a BBQ brush or utensils.
I think personalizing something means you put thought into it, and that counts more than how much you spent IMO.

Loves bbq. I'd just go to BBQ Galore they have a spice, rubs, and sauces section. You can generally find something pretty neat as far as that goes. It's not at all that expensive.

Is he the kind of guy who's really particular about his BBQ sauce? If not, you could get him a sauce gift pack (if such a thing exists), or make your own with a few different gourmet sauces.

If he's into BBQ'ing, maybe some Wagyu steaks, if they still sell those at Costco. Obviously they should be properly cooked sous-avide and then broiled but.. whatever.
Also thanks for the heads up on the wooden BBQ scrapers. Was looking at replacing old Bristly McImpaledinFootWire.

Ya they work great, I bought a stack to keep as gifts as they are a great price to right around $20.
This way you won't be feeding BBQ bristles to your guests either!

What about one of those BBQ branding irons? He can sear his initials into every steak.

As long as I am not eating cedar splinters. Which I still guess is better than wire bristles.

A couple of years ago for an uncles birthday (who is HUGE into BBQing), I went to Silk Road in Inglewood (they're spice merchants) and put together a really great spice kit. It made for a really cool gift because they're local, and they really do have the best BBQ mixes and flavoured salts. If you tell them you want to put together a gift, they'll help you, they built my uncles and it looked really great.
Make sure you check out the Alder Smoked Sea Salt and the Inca Fire Salt. Those were his favourites and he still uses them to this day, I use them now too.

I second the steaks idea. If he doesn't want a gift, steaks would be like something you can share with him. It's more of an experience than a gift.

Get him a plaque that says just what you said in the OP:
"Thank you, <his name>, for putting up with a lot of #### from me and the boys growing up.
<your name>"
Sounds like this man would appreciate and cherish something from the heart more than a bottle of booze or sauces. I know, I would.
Plus, he can hang it outside next to his BBQ and always be reminded of you.
