Love that song! Can't believe it didn't come to mind when I was doing my little list.

No mentions of "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen? seems like an obvious winner (e: whoops, someone did mention it)

Personal choices:
"Keep on Rocking in the free World" Neil young
"Nautical Disaster" The Hip
"Tom Sawyer" Rush (I still can't hear this on the radio without air-drumming like an idiot and singing in a crappy falsetto)

Some as-yet unmentioned bands/artists and my favorite tracks by them:

Big Lake - Junkhouse
Willie's Diamond Joe - Willie P Bennett
Daniel Lanois - Fire
On and On - Crash Vegas (actually I might include their cover of Pocahontas on a top 150, but with lots of Neil Young mentioned, I also want to give them credit for the very good songwriters they are.)
Gathering Storm - Godspeed You Black Emperor
The Bazaar - Tea Party
Grapes of Wrath - Fishing Tale

And a couple personal favorites for artists already mentioned:
Xanadu - Rush
Early Morning Rain - Gordon Lightfoot
You Turn Me On I'm a Radio - Joni Mitchell
Music Inspired by the Group of 7 - Rheostatics

I was surprised to go back two pages and not see anyone else mention him. One of Canada's best artists ever IMO. And one that exemplifies Canadiana in music.

Where Have All The Good People Gone?
Let It In
Mind Flood
Hard Road (as noted)

Just a lot of really, really great music. On par with Rush, Cohen, Lightfoot, Young, The Guess Who, the Hip, Bryan Adams, Alanis, etc.. as far as Canadian top Canadian musicians ever IMO.

I saw him play Old Mac Hall Ballroom on the tour for his first album.

What as show, he blew the doors of the place.

Gordon Lightfoot is mentioned, but not the most quintessentially Canadian song ever (now with live musical style re-enactments!):

The version from the Brave New Waves session is even better than the original, IMO.

I'm a huge fan of The Dears, and they have countless tracks that I think are great, but I'll go with one of the first tracks I heard from them that made me pay attention to them:

Also, no mention of Metric yet? Great band with lots of great songs, but maybe not all time greatest Canadian song ever? They at least get points with a very Canadian name.

I dunno, maybe I'm getting off the point of this now......

Can't get much more Canadian than Tom Cochrane's, Big League:

Quote:
"The song is based on a true story. I met a man in an arena when we were on tour just before sound check, a nice soft spoken guy, who told me that his son had aspirations to play pro hockey and had a scholarship, or had been close to one in the States. He asked me if we were going to play "Boy Inside The Man" that night and said that his son had been a big fan. I asked him if his son would be there, not realizing the man had been using the past tense. That was when he told me his son had died in a car accident that past summer... I felt for that guy, his story hit me hard.

Some songs are hard labour, but the best songs are born ... I carried that story with me for quite some time. Ken and I rented a house to write and pre-produce Victory Day. With the exception of the music equipment, we kept it bare and empty, not even a phone - nothing, like a Buddhist retreat or a monastery. In the upstairs room I simply kept a mat, tape recorder and guitar, that's all. Ken was producing the Tragically Hip at the time, so sometimes he wouldn't show up till late in the evening. I'd go into that room in the afternoon for an hour or so and meditate ... and sometimes I'd fall asleep in the silence. One day I woke up, picked up the guitar, turned on the tape recorder and played and sang "Big League" in one pass. One pass, and there it was ... born.

I'm as proud of that song as anything I've ever written. It's Canadiana, and even though it rocks, it's written in a true Canadian folk narrative style. But most importantly, I hope it cuts to the heart of life, love, loss and family ... I think it says something about the hopes and dreams we put into our kids' heads, and the transience and preciousness of life. This song's origins are culturally specific, but the story taps into something universal, into ideas and feelings that resonate through every culture." - Tom Cochrane

-"Monumental" by The Flatliners
