Man, the 00's were an amazing decade for music. Hip-hop especially. Some of the greatest albums ever:

-College Dropout
-Stankonia
-The Blueprint
-Marshall Mathers LP

Great non Hip-Hop albums:
-Is This It
-Kid A
-Sound of Silver
-Funeral
-You Forgot It In People

The 00s were pretty good between 2000-2004 or so, and mostly dreadful after that. Also rap was, objectively speaking, at least twice as good in the 90s as the 00s, so it really wasn't that good a decade for rap. In fact it's funny to mention Stankonia when most OutKast fans would have that no higher than 3rd best album by them, and nowhere close to the two albums that preceded it.

The '00s was garbage. Nothing new came out of it. It just seemed like the only evolution that came from the 00's was the commercialization of every genre to make it as consumable as possible. How many truly legendary music icons came out of the 00's?

All I can think of are a couple rappers and pop singers. Eminem? He got his shot in the late 90's but the 00's was his decade. Jay-Z and Kanye although Kanye is doing everything to destroy his career (Still think Graduation was one of the best albums ever, loved almost every song on there). Rihanna and Beyonce are still big but they don't count in my eyes since they don't write their own music. All of the big rock bands that emerged from the 00's seem to be out of the mainstream (coldplay, the killers...etc). I know there was a lot of good that came out then but you have to judge the decade on what was considered pop. Otherwise every decade has amazing music.

Also I'm going to strongly disagree with whoever said that this decade ('10+) has sucked. Top 40 has had a lot of decent alternative music and we saw the emergence of a brand new genre gaining mainstream acceptance. You might not like it but at least there has been some movement forward with Rock and Hip Hop also evolving to include elements of electronic music and we're seeing less commercialized music become pop.

AFAIK this was actually the last song released from the previous millennium. It was released on New Year's Eve, 1999.

I don't know, I've really reversed how I feel about it. I almost want to say I like Speakerboxx more. But the first three albums are just in another universe, as is most hip hop released between about 92-98.

Speaking of pop music, is it weird I actually much prefer pop music now than I did over a decade ago when I was the right age demographic for it?

I did Google that, cause I knew it was close. The album was released in '99, but it wasn't released as a single that blew up until 2000.

I'll throw in the cover of 'Smooth Criminal' by Alien Ant Farm.

This song wasn't a hit until the 1970s. It was also anachronistically used in "The Sting" which takes place 3 decades after it was written.

Kevin Rudolph feat. L'il Wayne, 'Let it Rock'.

Always used to hear this at Flames games and never knew who sang it so I looked it up one day. That was the last time I ever saw his name.
