Aren't 80% of servers in Calgary hot white girls who have the luck/privilege of being good looking? They sure aren't getting these gigs because of their serving abilities. Calgary has to have some of the most inept servers Ive experienced anywhere.

I was a furniture mover for over a year and only got tipped once by a crazy old man who said he was going to kill me; still took his $2 though. I made #### wages too, so I always feel it's a crime to pay waiters 15%+ unless it's for some ridiculously strange order that makes them take some extra effort.

I have no idea where this 20% is coming from. Majority of my family works in the restaurant business, and they would jump for joy if they could get 15% regularly.
I'm personally of the thought that if I felt like it was a good-great experience, 15% no question. Otherwise I rarely drop down to 10% unless I really didn't enjoy my meal and that generally takes effort by the server to screw up.

I'll tip 20% if the service is good. But being served by some girl at Earls or Ceili's or such who cares more about how hot she thinks she is than about giving me good service, well she'll be missing out on higher tips, that's for sure. I don't tip more just because my waitress is hot. They get the same treatment as waiters - good service = good tip.

But if you tip her more maybe you'll get her number.

Why would she have to give it to me? I've gone to the trouble of writing it down on my business card. I have little doubt she will txt me as soon as I walk out the door.

The waitresses at my local pub like me. That is the only indication that I tip well.

Interesting to hear this. I've been serving at a restaurant for the past couple months and I would be extremely happy to receive 15% constantly. I don't think I'm a terrible server as I get a lot of compliments on my service, but just limited tips. Which brings me to a question... Are you more likely to tip girls more than guys? Or is service service regardless of gender? I ask because I work with majority of girls and then consistently make more in tips for lesser service.

I can't believe there is an expectation to tip, regardless of service levels.
No wonder people sound so bloody entitled all the time.

I have an inherent desire to shower beautiful flirtatious women with money. I know it's. Stupid, but it's true.

As a bartender, the whole thing breaks down pretty easily for me. If people are coming up multiple times to get drinks and they don't leave me a tip, they all of a sudden don't get anymore drinks. Sometimes people get lost in the crowd, and I can't be held responsible if I somehow skip over you repeatedly.
Also, in extreme circumstances, I like to go for the public shaming angle. There is a stigma towards non-tippers as being cheap, so I can have some fun with that. That girl who may have gone home with you. She probably won't now that I loudly ask you to put a total under the tip line that you dashed out on your cc receipt. I understand 100$ + dash equals 100 $, but you never know, I could have some credit card fraud system worked out. It is best that you put down a total so I can't mess with it.
Also, say you come to the bar with your friends after making a fifty dollar drink order that consists of various combinations of citrus garnish, requests detailing the number of splashes of 7up, and perhaps just a cube or 2 less ice. I hope for your sake that you tipped me. For my sake, I hope you didn't, because the 10 dollars is not worth the same as being able to ask a group of people, 'Oh, so you are with picky b*tch-no-tip?' and then move onto the next customer. The looks on people's faces are priceless.

I usually tip 20% in the US, because I know they aren't being paid that great - and usually the service is better than most places in Calgary (talking about places I can afford). 15% in Calgary is good enough unless someone is just above and beyond great.

So here's the thing. I listened to the guy's interview on CBC this morning and he said that 15% isn't optional. You need to tip 15% even if you get garbage service.
I think that this 'expert' is an idiot.

Not intentionally, but ya, I probably do tip women more. My guess is most others do as well.
For what it's worth, if you're regularly getting 15% than you're probably pretty darn good at your job. Congrats. Take pride in your work, mate. It's a trait that will take you places.

But their cumulative tips have probably paid for 90% of the breasts in this city. Calling the rich names isn't helping us address the other 10%.

I think of the extra money that I give to female servers as a sort of "Sexual Harassment" Danger Pay.

Maybe at the establishments you frequent, Mr. High Roller, that cater to the white-collar crowd with lots of money, and your fancy-pants cars, and your stacks of cash, and so on. And you probably like to golf, too!
-edit- and that was mostly sarcasm because someone almost inevitably will bring out the "well if you don't get paid enough, get a different job!" argument, which is really saying "I get paid enough without tips, why aren't you smart like me?"

Either way, I usually tip 15% in most situations.

I know common waiters in Canada probably make around $3,000!
BTW...I'm in the 15% camp. 18.5% if service is supreme.
