Default Tipping is now at about 20% for good service

Not sure if there is already a thread, but I read an article on CBC:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...john-holt.html

The expert in the article says that 20% is now the standard, and nothing should be less than 15%.

I personally think it's creeping up way too high, but its one of those cultural things that would be really hard to change. I have seen acquaintances leave my industry (consulting) to go back into working at restaurants because they can make great money at a busy joint and meet new people.

If people are leaving downtown office jobs to go back to serving, I wholly imagine it is because tips are ludicrously good these days.

Or am I wrong? What does the CP world think?

That's been the standard out here for at least the last 5 years. Maybe it's a little high, but I just build that into my anticipated costs of going out.

My standard tip for adequate service is 18%. Good service gets you 20%. Below average service gets you 15%. Incredible service gets you 25% or 30%. Horrible service gets you anywhere from 0% to 10%. I realize that servers owe the kitchen staff a tip out, so if I give 0%, the server is actually paying out of their pocket for my meal. But there have been occasions where I really don't care and actually enjoy the idea of the server having to suffer for being such an idiot.

I also make it a rule not to tip less than $1 on very small orders if I'm going to tip.

I'm a cheap ass, so that's insanely high to me. I do a max of 15%. Good thing I don't go out to eat that much.

I max out at 15% too.

I also lower it if service is poor.

Yeah, I will usually tip about 20% for good service and 15% for average.

I disagree that nothing should be less than 15% though, that is ridiculous.

Its weird how the % of tip has gone up over the years. The cost of food constantly rises. Should the % of gratuity stay the same? Servers are still getting getting more money due to the increase in price

Crazy- I was thinking about this earlier today as we just got back from Vegas and had some crazy expensive restaurant bills.

I don't know too many people in the restaurant industry, but is it possible for waiters at the very expensive restaurants to make over 100K a year?

Either way, I usually tip 15% in most situations.

15% is it for me unless it's exceptional. Not going to bow to more upward pressure... if they want more money, they need to raise their base prices.

I max out at about 15%, but usually do about 12%

Of course, people should realize the pressing an auto tip of 12% leaves a tip of 12.6%, after the GST amount is subtracted.

Put me in the cheap camp. At $8/pint and $16/burger a 20% tip seems a little excessive for opening a tap or flipping a burger.

Actually, I've been making a conscience decision to tip less these days. 12% is the new 15%!

I never tip because I feel that I should only conform to societal norms that benefit me, and not conform to those that cost me money. I also have some vague idea that anyone making a career in the serving industry is a lesser person than me who should have had the foresight to be born white and privileged.

I tipped my movers last month before they got started and they were really damn shocked by it, like no one ever tips them.

Suffice to say, I didn't pay for extra insurance but not a single thing was broken or damaged in the move.

When I first read this I thought you were going in this direction:

Quote:
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make ****.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a **** who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you never ever tip, huh?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I tip when somebody really deserves a tip. If they put forth an effort, I'll give them something extra. But I mean, this tipping automatically, that's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, this girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. But she wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck *****?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.
Mr. Pink: Look, I ordered coffee, alright? And we been here a long **** time and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee I want it filled six times.
Mr. Blonde: Six times? Well, what if she's too **** busy?
Mr. Pink: The words "too **** busy" shouldn't be in a waitress's vocabulary.

Well, the entire system is silly. I'd love to see employers pay their staff so that I don't have to.
