Default Chad Johnson doesn't want backup goalie $

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
$5.7 mil per for the next two years for Mike Smith. Doesn't sound like Chad Johnson is interested in backup goalie $. UFA July 1.

Well I'm sure he would like more money. I can't see anyone paying him though

Good for Chad Johnson......but on what team would he be a starting goalie? He's a backup.

I'm going to the other way with this and say I will gladly take back up goalie money.

I've always dreamed of being a passenger on a Championship team. I'll take my pay and my ring for opening the door on the bench.

No reason to not have one of Gillies/Rittich backing up Smith full time once the season starts - hell, you can technically use both as the backup and rotate them through Stockton to get their reps in if you wanted... I liked what I saw from Gillies in limited action. I'd like to see more.

Smith is a great guy to shelter someone behind too, if they did indeed want to go this route

Aim higher. Give me that Bryce Harper money. Supposed to be like $450 million on his next contract.

Johnson is a back up enough said. If PHX signs him to be a starter well that is just a waste of resources.
If they sign him as back up money it is a good addition he will give them what they need as a back up role. Not more.

So what's the threshold above which, a salary is no longer "backup goalie $"?

Dont tell me you wouldnt do it if you could.

Thats the sweet spot, backup goalie on a strong team...thats the dream.

Despite that though, I dont really understand this from Johnson's perspective. He is what he is, hes a solid backup who can buy you wins while your starter rests.

Its what hes been for his whole career so I dont really know why he'd think his career trajectory has all of a sudden skyrocketed.

Good luck to him, and hey, maybe it'll happen, but also maybe at his age with his career he just wants a long-term contract and make some cash.

I'd rather Smith tutor Gillies. Similar sized goalies with solid fundamentals. Perhaps Smith can ramp up Gillies athleticism through sharing his workout regimen.

Usually the first step in order to get #1 money is to first become a #1 goalie. With Smith injury concerns they need a veteran backup for at least this season.
