Oof... that's quite a bit for Stepan, and I'm quite a fan of his.

Holy balls.
That seems like a lot for him, but I don't see him play much.

It's probably a good thing that Monahan and Gaudreau are both up for renewal at the same time. Keeps either one from breaking the bank (hopefully); I could see both getting signed to identical contracts.

It's a lot for that player but seeing it's the Rangers it really doesn't matter much as they always get out of their bad deals. If they don't get another round of compliance buyouts from the next CBA there will always be a foolish GM that will take one of those bad deals off their hands as we have seen time and time again.

Will be interesting to see what the Rangers do next season.
With Yandle, Kreider, and Hayes needing new contracts they likely are going to have to dump one to keep the other 2. (or move out Nash)

Has he ever had a 30 goal season or a close to 60pts? That seems really high for him and I do think he is a good player.

Not anymore, really... the elite guys are going to be in the $10M range, so a passable, second-rate first line center / elite 2nd line center (which is what a guy who puts up 50-60 points a season is) is going to command these bucks. Compare this to the Kesler deal, it's much, much better (granted, Kesler was in a different situation).
Also, Stepan's trending the right direction... only 25, had 44 points his first year, 57 points his second year, and last year 55 points in 68 games (a 66 point pace). Even missing those 14 games he was top 30 in scoring among centermen.
This seems like a pretty reasonable deal to me.

their D's too strong. I think they'll move out Yandle to give them the necessary breathing room.

44 in 48, 57 two years ago and 55 in 68 games is pretty damn good point production in today's NHL.
The Rangers bought 4 years of UFA as well.
I'd say its a fair deal.

I think that's the right comparison.
He is a 1/2 guy in terms of points, not elite 1st liner, but better than a 2nd liner. He is also strong at both ends of the ice. Very much like Kesler.
The biggest difference being that he's 25 and Kesler's entire contract is in his 30s.
So, as painful as it is to say, I think you have to call this a good signing.

I imagine Yandle will not be re-signed and while I'm sure they would like to move Nash's contract that won't be an easy feat with that salary and cap hit on the books for a few more seasons.
