Awesome news. Byron is a great 4th liner who can move up in the event of injuries and his contract makes him easy to move if younger players take his spot.
I'm getting exciting the Flames are basically the exact team as last year but with two great additions. Training camp will be ultra competitive.
Byron is a weird player with some top 6 NHL skills and some AHL skills. I do think keeping him on the team heading into training camp is the right move.
Great news. IMO, Byron is very underrated around here. The guy personifies the Bob Hartley system; speed, tenacity, hard work.
Sure, his hands aren't top 6 material and he's undersized, but he wins battles in spite of that most often. It's easy to forget but the first half of last season he was a big part of the team identity. Very glad to have him back, and hoping we see more of what we did last season before his injury.
Byron is a great utility player who can move in and out of the line-up. And he plays like a big man so his size hasn't been a big concern. Remember he did take out Shea Weber..
I like the philosophy of not losing assets with value, even if it's not a lot of value. He can be traded at the deadline and even if it's for a 5th round pick that's still better than not re-signing. Or if having Byron on the team helps free up a package trade deal than it still works out.
Worth keeping him for this alone!
Take this classless stuff elsewhere. In fact, don't do anything like this at all. To celebrate a player going off on a stretcher is disgraceful.

Of course it matters. First, it wasn't a very bad hit. Barely a penalty, and certainly not a suspension. Even a penalty is debatable, the hit was a bit awkward and from the side, but not from behind. Probably 2 minutes for boarding.
Second, Sedin wasn't hurt on the play.
Byron needs to make that play every time. 99/100 times it doesn't lead to a guy even going down to the ice, let alone getting stretchered off.

I have no issue at all with that hit. It was more unfortunate for Daniel than dirty. That's the way a guy like Byron has to play or he won't be in the NHL.

You still shouldn't celebrate the fact that a guy was carried off the ice on a stretcher.

Had Byron been available for the playoffs he probably would've had a bigger impact (killing & drawing penalties) than Raymond, Granlund, Jooris, Shore and Wolf

Besides, he turned his back towards Byron right before the hit. I think a player also has a responsibility not to put himself in a vulnerable position when he knows he's about to get hit.

Can't wait to see what Hartley does with Byron with 3v3 OT.
I would say he put him about 3 left of Barb. With Monahan, Gaudreau, Hudler, Frolik, Backlund, Bennett, Gio, Brodie, Hamilton to name a few, don't think Byron will be seeing much OT action.

Hard to say. He's their fastest player and 3 on 3 allows for lots of space.

He got a fair share of 4on4 ice-time and excelled, so I wouldn't be so sure.
And 3on3 is typically 2 forwards and 1 D, so just as much time to go around as 4on4.
