As noted by another poster, sounds like Lou has been subject to some owner meddling in last few years so his recent record may not be totally reflective of his performance.
The guy has proven to be a great manager of hockey teams. A tough negotiator, principled and has a vision of what is required for success.
But you have to wonder if at this point in his career, he is the right guy to oversee a total rebuild.
Some big name talent and egos in Toronto now. It will be very interesting to watch as a hockey fan.

Lou was working for the Devils before Kyle Dubas was born.

Crazy.

John Shannon @JSportsnet
The Maple Leafs will have to compensate the Devils with a draft pick for signing Lou Lamoriello as GM.

Should be a 3rd round pick.

I know the point he was making, I was just making a joke. No hard feelings!

Back on topic, does this mean all of Lou's weird policies will come over to leafs? Or does Shanny over rule those?

Actually he's perfect.

I mean if he's really there to mentor Dubas/Hunter and he imparts his wisdom upon the young executives and opens the door to the ol' boys club for them, then once the pain of rebuilding is done he gets to retire to an "advisory" role and the new management get's a clean slate with the fans/media.

Obviously ownership meddling is a different animal, but considering Toronto has Shanahan and his cronies already in place I doubt he's going to have to free reign in Toronto either.

Interesting move for the Leafs, but I'm more interested to see what happens to the Devils now. Its going to be tough to maintain the kind of stability that Lou had there over the years. I think hard times could be upon that team.

Once the leafs find success playing "devils" style hockey, I dont think i'll be able to stomach the crap out of TSN and Sportsnet about how the "league is changing" and how the only way to win is "to trap", etc.

Are there seriously no decent up and coming candidates that the Leafs could have pursued?

Lou hasn't been a good GM in a long time.

Because up until now it's been a whole lot of good times in New Jersey?

Other than a fluke cup run, they've been consistently mediocre for over a decade.

Yeah, this is pretty much how I see it as well.

Hire a senior guy to provide leadership, coaching, and experience. And it is at the perfect time as this will be a rocky period for the Leafs.

In a few years, move him up to the lounge and promote one of the assistant GMs, who get to take over with relatively clean hands.

It actually makes some sense. But I would imagine that Leaf fans are mostly losing their minds right now.

So, I would imagine that he has been brought in to help groom some younger guys. Why not have some senior people in there, it isn't like he will make all the decisions himself in TO.

Giving up that 3rd is crappy for the leafs rebuild though.

DGB called this a couple of months ago (lol)

(Lou Lamoriello walks in.)
Lamoriello: Hi guys. Sorry I’m late.
Babcock: Um… hi Lou. Can’t say I was expecting to see you here.
Lamoriello: Hey, the Devils needs a coach too you know.
Babcock: Right, but… you stepped down and appointed Ray Shero as GM.
Lamoriello: Yeah, that didn’t work out.
Babcock: It didn’t?
Lamoriello: He questioned me. It displeased me greatly.
Wilson: Wait, just being asked a simple question is enough to…

(Lamoriello reaches over and calmly stabs Wilson in the thigh with a pocket knife.)
Lamoriello: Anyone else?
(Everyone looks at the ceiling as a wounded Wilson crawls towards the exit.)
Lamoriello: Didn’t think so.

Does this change Ron MacLean's prediction about the oilers winning the cup in the next 2 years? A move like this would have to make the leafs a contender within the next 5 years or so in his eyes.
