Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes
Lou Lamoriello was a 24-year-old high school math teacher when the Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup.

The age difference between Lou Lamoriello and Kyle Dubas is 44 years. That's 'older' than Jaromir Jagr.

Yeah, I just don't see Lou as another voice in the room while submitting to Shanahan.

This was my initial thought (well... right after "WTF"). Shanahan obviously thinks highly of Dubas but he's hardly ready to run a team yet so he goes out and uses MLSE money to give the oldest of the Good Ol' Boys a hefty retirement fund to train Dubas and one day take give him possession of his rolodex.
I mean I can't think of any reason for Lamoriello to take a demotion to work someplace where he'll be under the harshest microscope in the hockey world except a big fat short-term paycheck where he'll be farming most of the work to Dubas and/or Hunter.

Will the Leafs have to give up a pick here, or does that not apply when poaching another teams President of Hockey Ops?

I'll admit, when I read the title I was thinking "Is it April Fool's Day?". Completely out of left field.

Also Lou is pretty hands on with his coaches and keeps them on a short rope. I would imagine Babcock is going to have more power due to his contract. Just seems like an odd hire as he's not a guy I would look to rebuild a franchise as he's always been a guy that's filled his team with veteran players that are good enough to keep them from being bad but never good enough to be true contenders.

That is crazy news. At Lou's age, the vision must be to show the ropes to Dubas for 3 or so years and retire.

Lou is a great hockey manager for sure. But with TO he has no Marty or Scott's to build on. Those 3 guys were pillars for Lous success.
Life after Marty has not been nearly the same for Lou.
Really good hire for TO though. Shanahan is going to have to ease back if this is going to work. Big egos in the same room now and Lou might be one of the smartest still in the NHL.

The Leafs President of Hockey Operations had something to do with hiring the Leafs GM?
No way!

He is?
He's a Hall of Famer, but let's be honest, NJ hasn't iced a quality roster in over a decade. He's no longer "a great hockey manager".

Well... he did manage to sucker Bettman into giving him a free 1st round draft pick and his team got to the Stanley Cup finals in the not to distant past.

I think this is interim without the label. They didn't have a GM and no one they really liked was available. Lou was already transitioning for retirement in NJ, so now he just takes a bigger salary in Toronto and retires in a year or so.

Also can't wait for big tuna to arrive and proclaim how awesome a signing this is.
