Trade him to Boston for Pastrnak + their next 3 first rounders.
Last season: Pastrnk had 10 goals, Gio had 11. goals for goals, makes sense right Sweeney?

Drouin and gaudreau would be fun to watch. Not at the cost of giordano. We won't trade him because he is worth more to us than any other team. But if we did I would want a budding young top prospect.

Connor McDavid, but Edm has all the Giordanos they need.

There would be nearly no trade worth it. He's one of the best captains ever and will leave a mark for 10-15 years.
Gios leadership abilities will likely result in 150 extra wins, 200 more goals and 150 less against over 10 years had he not been here for the formative years of Monahan, Brodie, Bennett, Gaudreau. That effect is not going to be worth trading away, besides Toews I'd put money on Gio as best captain around.

Because Anaheim really wants the cup
To Anaheim:
Mark Giordano (50% retained)
To Calgary:
2016 1st
2017 1st
Nick Ritchie
Then we sign Cody Franson and march forward.

I must say I'm not convinced Ritchie is going to amount to much at the NHL level. Franson is, at best, a number 4 defenceman. The Anaheim first rounders would be at the end of the first round so not sure things.

I wonder if the return for gio would increase or diminish if the the flames were to sign him to a new deal first.

Right now, he would increase for playoff teams as a rental. If we sign him then I could see bottom feeders looking for a veteran who's proven to help a team

Flames should see if the price for Franson has come down and sign him if they feel they need to trade Gio.
Not a replacement, but some insurance.

There isn't a single proposal I have liked more than just resigning Gio.
Guy misses 19 games and the playoffs and everyone forget just how excellent he really is.

...only reason I see us trading Gio is because we can't come to a reasonable contract extension.
I know how awesome he is. Fact remains though, it's not wise to be carrying a 39 year old at 9M cap-hit.

Would have to be NHL ready top prospects. Any first rounder is probably late 20's anyway, and too far away from making any impact if Giordano had to be moved.
It needs to get done before camp, or it gets closer to that possibility, which I don't want.

Agreed. Let's just get this done... 6 years x $7.5 million. Some will call it too long or too much. Some will say it's just the right amount... But I just want to get it done before the season starts.

Imagine the returns of Gio, Hudler and Wideman at deadline all with 50% salary retention. A 2mil dollar norris contender and captain. Insane! Wont happen, dont want it to happen. But its something to pass time/talk about in the off season.

I tried to be as clear as possible that this thread is - in no way - suggesting we should trade him... yet the posts by people who continue to interpret the topic in that light continue to roll in.
It's the summer, and trying to hypothetically gauge what he would be worth in that scenario doesn't seem like it's so outrageous it can't be discussed.
I think every sensible fan that cheers for this team would agree he's our heart and soul and should be resigned. And if not, there's already a raging debate about his age / long term worth in the rumoured ask thread.

Right now he is at Bob Hartleys hockey camp, with Johnny. Gio is still representing the Flames in Calgary and Pennsylvania.

I said it before in another thread:
1st round pick
A-level prospect
Roster player
I believe he would fetch that easily from a team that thought they could win it all. Anaheim for example.

I agree. A mid to late round pick likely amounts to nothing. A team that wants Gio is going for it - let them pay through the nose with a top prospect

Anaheim was one of my first thoughts, although it would be tough to trade to a contender in our division if the situation warranted a trade. (and hate to see anything that gives Kessler a better chance to win the cup)
But the Ducks have a small window with the salary they have tied up in their top forwards, and while their D is good they are all young. An established top d-man could be just what they need to get over the hump.
Wonder if they would part with one of their young D + Ritchie...
