I think the owners are going to have to come to a deal with the union for players with no movement clauses to be included in the expansion draft.

Why not ask for a bump in equalization pay? All they have to do is threaten to secede again, and voila the money will flow in.

Like ordering pizza and waiting until it arrives to see if you have enough.

Both Quebec & Las Vegas have been invited to Phase II of the expansion.

$10M, with $2M of that being non refundable.

I think.

Yes, but not Quebecor is now asking for money to actually follow through.

Definitely does not mean it isn't real imo

Lots of teams with ownership groups with varying stakes all around the league, including the Flames. I'm sure Quebecor will be the majority owner if they get a franchise, but getting investors along the way isn't cause for concern.

$.5B equals Canadian $657.85M

These guys need to be really deep pocketed or they will be paying off loans forever and it could affect the quality of players they ice. Thinking back Winnipeg and the new Coyotes owners got in cheap.

I jst find it laughable that the NHL charges $2m just to let you sit at the side of their sand pit and see if you like their toys, let alone being able to get in and get dirty.

Is an NHL franchise in QC really worth almost $650 million CAD? I would say its no slam dunk they come up with enough investors at this price. I certainly don't blame Quebecor for not wanting to take on that kind of risk on their own.

No different than a non-refundable deposit when you apply for college, just larger figures.

Does that amount need to be paid all at once when they are awarded the franchise, or is it over time?

At that cost, they would probably be better off waiting for a team in dire need of relocation like what happened with the Thrashers. The relocation fee can't be nearly that much, could it?

The fee was $60 million for the Winnipeg Jets.

The league isn't stupid - they aren't going to let a potential new owner come in and grab a team on the cheap and then move them to a more desired (by the league) location.

This is precisely what Balsillie kept trying to do and the league shut him down.

Look at the league as a partnership (like a law or accounting firm). If someone wants to become a partner, they have to buy in. You don't build a successful partnership and then simply let others join in - watering down your stake - for nothing.

Yes it needs to be paid all at one time like closing a sale of a house. These guys will likely borrow a lot of the money.

With two groups willing to pay the $500 million expansion fee, I doubt we see a cheap relocation fee like the Jets in the near future.
