Alex Prewitt @alex_prewitt
The team's release also says Fehr's elbow surgery, performed June 3, carries a recovery timetable of 4-6 months. So could be out until Dec.

I guess they figured they didn't have enough injury prone guys, but the contract is fine imo.

Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Bonino, Hörnqvist, Kunitz, Perron, Plotnikov, Dupuis, Bennett, Fehr. No idea who the 12th and the extra forwards will be and how healthy Dupuis is, but that's a fantastic forward group with a lot of depth. Pittsburgh is going to be scary this year.

Ya pretty nice looking group of forwards. Now they need their young dmen to step up and maybe they can make some noise in the East.

Nice group of forward but the defence is very vulnerable to a Letang injury

This is the type of contract you sign your 3rd and 4th liners to. $2 million and under.

Pittsburgh looks much better than they did last year already. Better depth, although they could use another puck moving D-man. However, they do seem to have some players that have been "problem children" with other organizations (Kessel, Tom Erixon). Also, several cast-offs from other organizations that didn't see much use for them (Bonino, Fehr, Clendening, Perron, Cole). It's a good thing they still have Crosby and Malkin to hold it all together. Just hope they, or Letang, don't get hurt.

Didn't understand this comment. Did you mean before there was a salary cap? My take was that you can't be paying $3 million/ year to players in your bottom six or else you don't have enough cap space for your stars.

I read it the wrong way, thought it was a stab at the Bouma "overpayment"
Its a solid contract.

Yeah I have no issues with Bouma's contract. Is it $200K high? That can be debated but whatever.
But $3 million to bottom six forwards or bottom pairing defenseman (or worse yet, healthy scratches or demotion candidates) are cap killers.
At a $70 million cap and 23 roster players required, you have right about $3 million to spend per player. So your bottom guys should not be making that much. Flames have Raymond, Stajan, Engelland and Smid all in this category. Each of these guys bring something to the table but all of them are overpaid and have 2 years remaining (3 for Stajan).
The Fehr contract is right where you want to be for a player like that. I don't follow the Pens real closely but seems like they assembled a decent group of forwards with some obvious top end talent.

Not a bad pick up, him being out for 4 months sucks. But the guy is like a modern day Joel Otto.
