Icon48 Lady Byng Finalists: Gaudreau, Granlund, Tarasenko

Looks like the Wild have leaked the Byng Finalists

https://www.nhl.com/wild/news/granlu...17/c-289022308

Quote:
The National Hockey League (NHL) today announced Minnesota Wild forward Mikael Granlund (pronounced mih-KIGH-ehl GRAN-lund) as one of three finalists for this year's Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability. The recipient of the 2017 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, voted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, will be announced Wednesday, June 21, during the 2017 NHL Awards from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas at 7 p.m. CT on NBCSN.

Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames and Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues were also named finalists for the 2017 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. It marks the first time Granlund has been an NHL Award finalist in his five-season career and the first time a Wild player had been named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.

What about all the complaining and faking injury that people accused him of?

Surely not Lady Byng material.

Johnny finished with 4 PIMs. A highsticking call that was actually committed by Monahan's stick and embellishment (which he was fined for).

Remember when Burke claimed he didn't want Lady Bing winners on his teams because they're pussies and then Hudler awkwardly won it later that year? I always thought it was hilarious how Hudler went through the entire Flames management team in his speech except Burke.

Gaudreau finished 4th for the Lady Byng last year. No doubt due to the "slash" on Kadri that incensed some Toronto media.

I never caught that at the time. Maybe the whole shoeless routine was an inside joke too.

Nope. He wasn't anywhere near the running for that award.

You're right, because 100% of votes went to Troy Brouwer.

I agree. It should be changed. It's not about sportsmanship, it's about being smart and not taking penalties.

I don't think Johnny should win this award. Complained to the officials too much and was fined for diving. Plus, his acceptance speech will never be as good as Hudler's.

I think Ferland should actually be the Flames nominee for this award, for a guy in his role and fight as much as he did, to have only 50 minutes in penalties is amazing.

Plus he's always respectful in his fights, never jumps anyone, lets the other guy get ready. Never complains to the refs, just plays the game hard and respectful.

If I was up for that award, I'd pick a fight to avoid that.

Lame award.

Johnny (somewhat quietly, it feels like) put up 61 points this year (18 goals). Probably enough to be included in the discussion, but not sure he deserves the award this year. Johnny had an off year due to the slow start. He'll bounce back, but not sure his season was "award-worthy". He'll be nominated for bigger and better awards in the future.

When I think of Lady Byng winners, I use Joe Mullen as the benchmark. Different eras, I know, but he won it twice as a Flame and did it as an impact player in those years. (Sent packing too early from the Flames too, fwiw...)

This is such a strange award. It was originally meant to be awarded to a player who had the most gentlemanly demeanour on the ice. Now the nominees are basically whichever of the top 40 scorers have the lowest penalty minutes. I guess with so many teams in the league today, most of the people doing the voting don't really know much about the players at all, besides stats.

Same with the Selke award. Defensive play requires a degree of expertise and knowledge with all the players in the league, not just the stars. Too hard. So today it goes to whichever of the 30 scorers seems to be good defensively.

The NHL awards is so bias towards forwards. The NHL recognizes two-way forwards, penalty-free forwards, goal scorers (always forwards), and most points (always forwards)

They NEED a defensive-defenseman award. Especially now that they're trying to get with the "advanced" stats
