[Rumour] Islanders plan to submit bid for arena at Belmont Park

The Islanders plan to submit a bid to the state to build a new hockey arena at Belmont Park, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Friday, marking the first public confirmation of the team’s stadium strategy.

Saying that the Islanders “are reviewing their options,” Bettman also mentioned the land next to Citi Field in Willets Point as a potential landing spot for the Islanders and added that the renovated Nassau Coliseum is “not a long-term option.”

“Yes, there is an RFP [request for proposal] for Belmont and I know they are going to participate in that,” Bettman said of the Islanders. “I believe that everyone thinks there is a terrific opportunity there, if not at Willets Point, to create a more hockey friendly environment for the Islanders, which is something Scott [Malkin] is committed to do.”

Sources have said the Islanders have been talking with the owners of the Mets about teaming up on the development. The Islanders are being advised by the Oak View Group, a sports arena development company backed by Madison Square Garden.

The operators of Barclays Center plan to pitch the Islanders on a return to their former home, according to Kevin Law, the president and chief executive of Long Island Association, the region’s largest business group.

But Bettman said Friday he doesn’t see the Coliseum as a possibility for the Islanders. “I don’t know if it’s a short-term option,” he said, “but I know it’s not a long-term option.”

A spokesman for Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, who has lobbied the Islanders to return to the renovated Nassau Coliseum, said he had no comment on Bettman’s remarks.

The racetrack, grandstand, training, and barn facilities are located entirely in the community of Elmont in Nassau County, New York. According to the City of New York's own map portal, the Long Island Rail Road station on the property, the ramp between the grandstand and the train station, and some of the adjoining parking fields straddle the Queens County line.

Belmont Park has direct on- and off-ramps to the Cross Island Parkway, which runs north-south and is just to the west of the park. Belmont Park's physical address is given as 2150 Hempstead Turnpike (New York State Route 24).

For those wondering where they could fit a stadium at this location? Apparently Belmont wouldn't have a problem giving up the training track at the south end of the property as it's mostly used for new car storage now.

I can see this turn out just like stampede park for parking revenue.

The small parking lot in between the train station and the treed area south of the grandstand is a little bigger than the land we're talking about as the location for the Flames' new arena at Stampede Park.

That would be the most logical location because of its proximity to the train station.

Considering the Islanders will be without a home, they can't exactly lollygag around. They are in far more of a time crunch than the Flames.

I happen to have good aim, thank you very much. The Flames deserve every ounce of criticism when it comes to the arena issue. I remember many people trashing Katz up in Edmonton for how he handled their arena situation. The fact is, they have an arena and we don't. The other fact is, Ken King is looking just as foolish, if not more, than Katz.

Barclays Center for at least two more seasons. The earliest their current deal can be terminated is after the 2018-19 season.

I suppose there's a chance they could be convinced to move back to Nassau County. The renovation to the Coliseum reduced its capacity to only 13,000 (but that's all they averaged in Brooklyn this year), and the group that runs the Barclays Center is also the new operator of the Coliseum, so they might offer the Islanders an incentive to move back temporarily.

The marriage between the New York Islanders and Barclays Center could soon be coming to an end.

According to a report by Bloomberg on Monday, officials with the Brooklyn arena are preparing to dump the NHL team after concluding the venue would be better off financially hosting Nets games and concerts.

The team and the arena have a 25-year lease, but the Barclays Center could get out of the deal after the 2018-19 season. If the Islanders terminated the lease, they could leave after next season. The Islanders and Barclays have an unusual agreement in which the arena pays the team $53.5 million a year in exchange for business operations, which includes tickets and suite sales.

Per a report in Newsday by Jim Baumbach and Robert Brodsky, the Barclays Center honchos are preparing to alleviate their issues with the Islanders by urging them to move back to Nassau County into the renovated and newly opened Coliseum.

There’s no timeline but the report says the pitch will be made when the sides get together to discuss either extending their agreement or triggering either out clause. That could be within the next month, but could take until January to be resolved.
