Question LF: Manager Environment and Investigations, Major Projects

JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Director, EHS Major Projects, you are in a key leadership position which supports capital project constuction in support of Suncor's growth strategy. You work with project design personnel and construction management to ensure environmental compliance is achieved on all projects and implement/monitor environmental enhancement programs across all Major Projects (both mining, in-situ and safe mode) construction sites
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Work with team members to ensure that project environmental compliance requirements are understood with accountability assigned for all required actions. This includes ensuring monitoring programs are in place for compliance on-site for water/waste/soils management and spill reporting as well as ensuring the completion and submision of environmental reports regulatory agencies
  • Monitor environmental performance across Major Projects and analyze and determine trends; identify corrective actions required to improve performance to meet and exceed goals.
  • Lead the implementation of Corporate and Major Project's environmental programs across construction sites including new projects and sustaining capital projects, ensure that staff/contractors are knowledgeable of Suncor's EH&S policies/ procedures/standards and share relevant information and progress reports on performance with Business Unit Management
  • Provide input and critique new and revised Suncor Project Implementation Model (SPIM) standards and lead in the development of environmental and governance related SPIM standards as assigned
  • Provide ongoing leadership and coaching to Major Project's construction project personnel to improve environmental awareness with the aim of improving our performance and minimizing our losses
  • Direct a team of environmental advisors to work collectively with Construction Management and safety counterparts to promote responsible environmental practices as well as safe and compliant work practices across the various construction sites
  • Attend area team meetings and actively participate in the development of an understanding of site issues, means for addressing them as well as integration of resources through the development of interdependent relationships with other business units and departments
  • Provide support to Project Management through review of contractor standards, procedures and work practices to ensure compliance with applicable legislation and Suncor requirements to foster continuous improvement in environmental performance
  • Review incident investigations, ensure the follow-up of assigned actions and interface with regulatory agencies as required
  • Direct the Major Projects EHS Incident Investigation Specialist to ensure that all investigations meet the applicable standards that are outlined in OEMS Element 15
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
  • A university degree with at least ten years extensive environmental experience of which three to five have been directly related to project design and construction activities; comparable operational environmental experience will be considered
  • A minimum of five years supervisory experience
  • Knowledge and experience in development, implementation and use of management systems is an asset
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Extensive knowledge of local environmental regulations, permit requirements, etc
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills
  • Strong ability to plan and prioritize environmental initiatives and work with others to execute strategic priorities.
  • Strong ability to influence and coach others to enhance performance
  • Strong ability to maintain multiple accountabilities and relationships.
