Oh come on now!!! Do you realize how many dogs out there are doing search and rescue, therapy work, assisting the disabled, helping men and women in the performance of their duties in sometime life threatening situations? ... and we're not even talking about people's personal relationships towards their dogs and how the dog can help them in their daily life.
The list just goes on and on with regards to your ignorance on the canine species.

Yes, dogs can be contributing members of society, but only when they are directed by a human.

I hear you, but unlike humans who develop further, dogs stick to what they are tought, the contributing members are their trainers.
I do appreciate the work the dogs do, but the contributing members are not the dogs, they lack cognitive abilities.

Okaayyy... your point is?
Nobody is advocating that dogs be able to frequent Ranchman's on their own. They will be there under the direction of a human.
And by the way, your statement also holds true for most humans also.

A trainer would be useless with out the dog. The dog is a vital part of the team. They contribute equally.

My point is that you inferred that dogs where the driving force in those activities, as if the dog dropped out, opened it's eyes and decided it wanted to be a seeing eye dog (or whatever the current term is). Fact is it was a human, that decided that dog would do that job.
If left to their own devices dogs would run wild in packs.

Ha, yeah I bet this is going to turn into a kennel with a couple of tables in the middle. Christ you're blowing things out of proportion.
I've eaten at tons of places that allow dogs on the patio and have never witnessed a single one of the issues you seem to think will come to existence.

The dog is interchangeable. The trainer is not.

NYC, where I live. Perhaps it's the fact that I live somewhere where people are forced to actually coexist that makes me laugh at people acting as if this is a big deal. The flipside to that is that Calgary is a city that makes it incredibly easy to avoid something that you don't want to be around, just keep on driving and the problem is solved.

Tell that to dog owners who have had a dog give up their lives protecting them while performing hazardous and down right life threatening duties (police work, military, etc.)
The dog is not interchangeable. These people have an extremely close bond between them and their canine partner (and yes... I say partner!).
