Thanks for posting this. Something I haven't really given much thought to, how hard it would be to be a female sports personality. It's good to be reminded that although we've come a long way, there is still so much sexism in our society and work to do.

Twitter is a cesspool, you can find disgusting comments about pretty much anyone with a public persona.

The internet as a whole is very toxic to women, we have a long way to go.

On the one hand, this is obviously true - in fact, statistically, men get more online abuse than women.
On the other hand, men aren't getting targeted for their maleness. The way online abuse is directed at women is specifically framed to attack them basically for being women. It's not comparing apples to apples.
On the other other hand, block the trolls, or hell, turn off your damned phone. No one's forcing you to read stuff you don't like. If we prevent people from saying anything that might cause someone to have a negative emotional reaction, no one could say anything at all.
On the other other other hand, these people are trying to do their jobs: they cannot just turn their phones off, and because of what they do and its public nature, they can't avoid this stuff.
On the other other other other hand, isn't there a sense that if you do a job that involves having a public persona, it brings with it inevitable attention, including negative attention? Kanye and Kim can't reasonably complain about being on the cover of tabloids in the checkout aisle at Safeway.
... The topic is very challenging. It'd be nice if you could just say "this is obviously horrible, people need to stop being a-holes", because it is and they should. Unfortunately, first, there is no chance that's going to happen: hello, welcome to the internet. Second, concept creep means that the concept of unacceptable speech (or online harassment) will continually expand to include legitimate criticism or mockery in order to stop people from saying things that upset someone; in fact, Twitter's harassment policy already has stepped well over this line, as has Facebook's.

In other news, water is wet and the sky is blue.
Places on the internet are a cesspool, and folks keep acting like this is a surprise. It's not.
The saving grace I find is that a lot of folks tend to far overestimate the 'reach' of the internet, frequently assuming that "everyone should know this because everyone's online!"...when actually, they aren't.

Yeah I've seen some of the stuff directed at Michelle Beadle - it is absolutely disgusting how these "guys" hide behind the internet and spew this crap. I honestly don't know how those ladies do it - tremendous credit to them to keep pushing on - I think I would have folded early in the battle if I were them

Absolutely, it can be a cesspool. It doesn't have to be one all the time though.
There's no reason for some loser to threaten a woman with violence because he doesn't agree with her opinion about the local baseball team. She shouldn't have to deal with it.
A video demonstrating that hey, there's an actual human being at the other end of this kind of behaviour can only be a good thing. Certainly better than the "oh well, this bad thing happens to people, who cares..." approach, even if it won't ultimately make much of a difference in the grand scheme.
Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing the rationale people might have for doing this kind of thing. Anyone want to admit to it? I'm sure you're out there!

Celebrated Square Root Day
|
There was something a little overly done/fake about that segment. That's coming from someone totally sympathetic to the issue, but you put men in front of a couple women and read tweets to them and you're not going to get the guys crying and pausing indefinitely while staring into the abyss saying "I'm sohuhuhuhuhuorrrry, this isn't me, I'm just reheheheheeading tweets".
Everyone involved knows what's going on and in normal interaction it would just be the guys reading them and going "Wow, brutal hey?" "Man, people are awful".
It was just awkward overacting that kind of took away from it, imo.

The question to ask oneself after watching the video is: What can I do to help stop this type of behaviour?

I think it's entirely inappropriate to reach the conclusion that the problem here is Twitter.
No, the people existing the cesspool that are making these comments are the problem and we can ever so slightly try to improve things by not condoning any type of sexist hateful language and behaviours.
