This is important to remember. I knew someone that took the healthy equity from their Calgary house and bought a high end house in Sparwood BC just because they could.

They regret it now as they want to move elsewhere but can't sell since there's only so many buyers for a house like that in Sparwood.

As for Cranbrook, it's a small town. I don't enjoy small town living, so if never live there. Do not say East Kootenays or West Kootenays. There is only one East Kootneay area. Put them together and they are the Kootenays. Individually they are singular.

Cranbrook is a nice spot and I wouldn't even worry about a 20% paycut, I've found small town BC way way cheaper to live in than Calgary. You save a ton of money of recreational activities, there are so many things you can do in the mountains for no cost.

Serves them right for buying a place like that in Sparwood. Should have bit the bullet and bought a place in Fernie instead.

Best part of Cranbrook is the close proximity to the US. Two hours and you can hit Sandpoint and less than four hours and you can hit Coeur d'Alene which are two great summer destinations as well as Spokane, Whitefish, etc. As for the city itself I'm kind of lukewarm on it compared to some other BC cities. It's okay but kind of boring if you aren't really outdoorsy.

How is that even possible? I pay $1100 a year in BC with $2M liability, full collision and comprehensive coverage.

Cranbrook is a great town, for the East Kootenay. If you are outdoorsy at all, you have pretty much everything at your beck and call. Plus you are so close to Fernie which is just a great area. Awesome skiing. Awesome beer (or at least it was until I stopped drinking a few years ago). Awesome people and just the best atmosphere.

Best of luck to you mate. Too bad you weren't moving the the West (Best) Kootenay. I know the area a lot better.

I don't know I was paying 1048 a year in Alberta and when I moved to bc it jumped to over 2000 a year for the same coverage

Is your driving record boarder line the worst? I was paying around 1500 at 21 in BC, and when I moved to CGY it jumped to 2900 for the exact same coverage. I'm now paying just a hair over 1000 being back in BC at 27.

2m liability.
300 collision.
300 comprehensive.

The Kootneys are an amazing place. I am a city slicker who enjoys the finer things in life that a living in a big city offers, but if I had to move to a small town that part of the world would be near the top of my list.

Also, I am possibly the only person who has an Australian passport which contains the words "Place of Birth: Trail".

I was in construction for many years and worked all over BC, AB and some in Sask. and Man. The Kootenays rank right up there as a favourite area.

I'd read years ago that Cranbrook held the title for most hours of sun per day in Canada. Probably no longer the case, but you'd certainly save on heating bills! I'm not a fan of small town living myself, but I would definitely consider Cranbrook

When I last visited one thing I noticed was there were a lot of 'interesting' young people, lol. Kind of like Kelowna but more legit

I don't know if they are long for Cranbrook as relocation may be in their future.
