January 20th, 6 games
Sorry bout the lazy OOT but don't see a thread up yet.
There is a free preview on Shaw 350-60.
Carolina is dominating the Penguins early on, great game so far.

PK back in the lineup tonight. Rinne vs Talbot.
Sounds like if Talbot doesn't see a lot of work he could start tomorrow. If he gets quite a lot of work expect Brossit tomorrow.

The Original Six game is still scoreless late in the third period! Scott Darling has faced 28 shots including 17 in the first period.
The Devils have only eight shots on goal against the Habs. Kinkaid is in net for the Devils as Schneider is sick.

As long as it isn't a 3 pt game.
Which of course it will be since the Oilers go to OT every game.

Karl Stollery takes a boarding major and the Habs get a three minute power play due to Torrie Mitchell taking a minor penalty. The Habs score twice, 3-1 Montreal!

Hossa scores the winning goal with 86 seconds left in regulation time, Chicago wins 1-0. Great game as both goalies played well!

No.
If the Flames miss the playoffs to Nashville by 1 point then the loss last night will be the reason, not the Coilers losing tonight.
Never mind the plethora of points the Flames fail to get between now and the end of the season.
There's never a reason to cheer for the Oilers to win. Ever. There are a few instances to cheer for their opponent to lose but tonight is not one of them.

If Nashville wins in regulation, they do jump us to the WC1 spot, but we're still in WC2. We would also be 6 pts behind the Oilers, but they no longer hold a game in hand. It also means that the Preds probably worked the Oilers over and made them tired for tomorrow. Hopefully.
Now if the Oilers win, that pads their cushion on us (their division rivals) who are also essentially the ones directly behind them for that 3rd Pacific spot. 8 pts up is pretty hard to make up when you only have 1 more game against them. Nashville merely loses one of their games in hand, but even then they would only need to go 1-0-1 in order to jump us.

This, exactly. The #3 pacific spot is guaranteed to be there and is very attainable if the team can start winning the games that they are supposed to.
Besides, Nashville is a team that should be ahead of the Flames. They are deeper at forward, more talented and deeper on defense, and they have better goalies. They are a good team and they shouldn't be doing as bad as they are.
The grease, otoh, despite winning most of their games (for the first time in 25 years) are actually not good. Their forward depth is not good, their d depth is actually pretty good, but Talbot has been incredible. He's stolen more games for the grease this year than non-Kipper goalies have stolen for the Flames since 04. If he falls apart they can be caught and passed easily. If he doesn't, (likely) they can still be caught and passed by playing the same good hockey that got the Flames within 2 points of them less than 2 weeks ago.

Look ahead, not behind. I know the Oilers have been kissing some major hockey god ass but they can very well go on a skid of their own allowing the Flames to catch them.

Agreed. There are well over 30 games remaining. We can manage this ourselves. Plus if the Preds jump us then that means STL is now in the mix.

This is the picture as of right now.
I have excluded the teams underneath Vancouver, since even if they won all their remaining games on hand they would not catch us.
If STL loses and Nashville wins (another reason to not cheer for the Oilers) NSH sails into the 3rd Central spot and the Blues are suddenly clawing for a WC spot. With goaltending issues.
St. Louis is in a bit of a funk. They are on a pretty bad skid, just coming off a 7-3 blowout loss to the capitals. Out of all the teams in the hunt, they have the worst trending results by far. The worst goal differential out of everyone too.
The Predators are looking decent lately, the Blues not, so they probably end up taking the Predator's place in the race for the wild cards by this time next week.

Rough looking game tonight in Edmonton. Maybe this will take some of the p### out of the Oilers.
