Forbes' Best Scorers For the Money: Iginla and Glencross
Edited since the link leads to a sideshow:
Not exactly authoritative since I think the methodology is flawed. They have Iginla ranked first and Glencross ranked 5th. Here's the order:
1. Igina
2. Selanne
3. Brendan Morrow
4. Couture
5. Glencross
6. Moulson
7. Claude Giroux
8. Vrbata
9. Ennis
10. Kunitz.
Quote:
To figure out the league’s best bargains in the offensive zone, we gave each NHL player two points per goal scored and one point for each assist over the last three seasons. Then, to keep things manageable and ensure we were only looking at the top scorers, we limited the pool of players to those with at least 150 points. That left 133 players once we excluded Sergei Kostitsyn and Ilya Kovalchuk, who both currently play in the KHL.
We then converted each scorer’s numbers to a point-per-game rate to account for games lost to injuries, and from there it was simply a matter of dividing each player’s 2013 cap hit by his point-per-game rate (again, using double points for goals). The ten players with the lowest cap hit per PPG are the NHL’s best scorers for the money.

To save everyone the time, it's a click through slide show and they have Iginla's cap hit as 1.8m. That is as far as I got.

That's not a very accurate picture they paint. Iginla's contract isn't worth $1.8 million, it's worth $6 million. Iginla's performance clauses are all really easy to hit, so the claim his cap hit is only $1.8 million is erroneous. The Bruins still have to play Iginla and that money does count against the cap. Poor work by Forbes.

What's Iginla on pace for? 15 goals or something like that. I'm thinking if his performance clauses involve goals he's going to fall short. It's not a given he will break 50 points.

I agree that it isn't a very accurate picture, but technically the claim that his cap hit is only $1.8 million isn't erroneous. Capgeek lists Iginla's cap hit as $1.8M as well.

I didn't bother looking through the slideshow after seeing the Iggy/$1.8 million thing.
What about Monahan? He should be up there.

Iggy's already hit his $3.5M bonus by appearing in 10 games. But that hot is deferred until next season.

Interesting though that 3 of the 10 were(are) Flames players.

Its not bashing, its a basic understanding of statistics.
Iginla wins because of his "$1.8M" cap hit. Thats BS. His real cap hit is $6M and he may break 50 points. Thats not bang for your buck.

Maybe he meant three signed an NHL contract with the Flames?
