I wonder if the Theo we all grew up with as a player was a decent person and now his brain is fried from alcoholism. That's making excuses for him though and he doesn't deserve any excuses from what he has become today.

Yeah... based on his own biography, and random accounts/stories he was always a POS off the ice depsite his very likable on-ice persona.

I'm surprised he's not a RFK Jr guy.
Him and Aaron Rodgers would make a great podcast.

My brother used to baby sit for him and his at the time wife in the 80s. Said he was a complete ass hole.

Even more he was publicly a crank there are reasons his number hadn't been retired.

I wasn't in to much hockey during his time. Why was he so idolized? Was he that good, or was it something else?

Good and absolutely fearless.
But like many Calgarians, I’ve disliked him since I was young due to being around him and his family outside of hockey.

Such a small guy that played with such a big heart during a time the NHL was ruled by big guys and goons. He would hit, chirp and even fight sometimes while also piling up goals and assists. Such a pain to play against so I loved that he was on my favorite team. Easily my favorite Flame growing up. I also sent him requests in the mail a couple times for an autograph and he sent me back an autographed picture right away, it was pretty awesome. And eventually knowing his background it was easy to cheer for a guy that had a troubled upbringing.
Now......I don't even recognize who he is anymore. Went from a guy I was so proud to cheer for, to.......this. It's just sad. The Theo we knew isn't coming back. If anything he's going even further over the cliff.
Such a shame to watch a guy alienate so many people that were in his corner for decades. He's long gone.

He was one of the main reasons I kept paying for my seats in the 90s. We had such crappy teams, and he always gave us something to cheer for with his skillful play and aggressive behavior.
Also he was one of the few players who I admired for purposely giving us a break on his salary.

A friend of mine still tries to convince me that #14 should be retired, based solely on his on-ice accomplishments. I used to love watching him play too. Passionate, the underdog, a pest to opponents, entertaining.
Nope. Off-ice matters. Fleury's brand is so toxic now and he is a complete joke. There is no benefit to the Flames' brand by giving him any attention or recognition. I wouldn't even clap if he was in attendance and they flashed his face on the jumbotron. And as much as I'd love to see someone else wear #14 and just get it over with, that too would draw unnecessary attention to him. #14 will remain rotting in jersey purgatory.

I don’t see the Flames organization putting Theo at a microphone at a ceremony.

Yeah, back in the day Fleury was awesome!
Whatever else, the guy had skill and drive. He was an incredible hockey player.
Now...he sounds like he should be hanging out with Queen Didulo in her dumbass RV handing out magic sardines or whatever.
Its definitely a conundrum because as a Calgary Flame he was amazing. As a person though? Not so much.
It hurts. I know he's been through Hell, and I've literally cheered for him but now?
I know all NHL players cant be Jarome Iginla or Robyn Regehr...but I cant support Fleury. I cant support this. I'd say 'maybe if he just STFU' but its even too late for that.

Now that Xitter is monetized for content creators and influencers, there's no doubt Mr. Fleury will become even more provocative.

Yeah, wouldn't back down from anybody. Seemed to play better the more the crowd hated him. San Jose especially hated him for some reason. He loved playing 4v5 and scoring, really anything where the odds were not in his favor, he truly embraced it. Scored a shorthanded hat trick one time. I don't know if anyone else has ever done that.
Once he got clipped in the face by someone's stick and the referee wouldn't let him play because there was blood all over his jersey. The equipment people were taking too long to find a replacement, so some lady in the stands just threw her Fleury #14 jersey over the glass to him. He put it on and went on the ice. They didn't allow it because it was autographed and probably not the authentic.
These would be classic Flames memories if he wasn't tweeting this stuff.
