My buddy told me to avoid Covenant at all costs. Apparently it's broken to the point that no matter what you do, it won't work like other settlements. Someone always has ownership of something and you can't use it. Also the prebuilt turrets destroy other turrets and you can't scrap them.
It looks good, but it has to get patched.

On Christmas Day my son will be opening an Xbox One. He is only 10 so will not be playing Fallout 4 which comes with the system, however reading this thread has me interested. I have not had a true gaming system since my original PlayStation, but am definitely going to play the Xbox.
Two questions:
1) Is there a Fallot 4 guide I should follow? Or is this a game you can just figure out on your own?
2) What games would you recommend for a 10 year old? He have NHL 16, Minecraft and a Lego game. Are there others that are suitable.

Fallout 4's a little involved if you haven't played a Fallout title before. There are lots of tips and guides littered throughout the web.
Once you fire up the Xbox you'll find lots of potential titles that would be suitable for a 10 year old in the digital store...go and have a browse. I'd recommend Rare Replay as a good starting point. It comes with a bunch of games that Rare has developed over the past few decades from a variety of genres.

I've gone with the high luck, low intelligence strategy. I'm approaching level twenty and it's starting to get pretty funny now. Basically I can't take a punch but my crits can be devastating. Idiot savant is hilarious as well

There are guides online and I'd suggest you use them for some of the technical gameplay elements which the game might explain to you but does so in a very quick manner (ex - it took me a couple attempts at fighting and reading the tutorial to get all the controls down since the tutorial pops up in the top-right corner when enemies appear).
Past that though, the game basically shoves you in face first into a world where you can do what you want. It's a traditional Bethesda game in this sense: there are no guidelines. The game is about exploring a world. You can completely ignore the story a great deal and make it your own post-apocalyptic version of Sim City or go on raider murder sprees. And you can opt to ignore all sense and engage raiders in power armour with a pipe pistol (personal experience: it can be done...it just takes time and tactics).
I'm not there yet, but I've been told many times that the endgame does have branching endings to a small degree. I'm not sure the game warns you at all (ala Fallout New Vegas, where the game gives you distinct warnings that starting a certain mission will cause all other factions to stop working with you and therefore lock out their possible ending), but watch out for that. You could refer to guides if you'd like for that.

Sure, mine is along the lines of "How a Suburban Mother and Housewife Learned to Eat Roaches, Kill Mutants, and Steal to Survive."

Fallout 4
Mine would be "Watch a nerd get butchered by Bloatflys and other zany misadventures of the Sole Survivor." - 'How many mini-nukes does it take to kill a raider?' Foreword by Dogmeat and Cait.

Just checked out Covenant. Tried to get the settlement 3 separate ways. First by killing everyone straight up, second by siding with the Synths on the quest, third by siding with the Compound. All three options leave the settlement uninhabitable. I can't use a single bed.
