Billionaire Oilers owner Katz gave $430,000 to Alberta PCs
Quote:
Billionaire entrepreneur and Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz gave Alberta’s Progressive Conservatives nearly half a million dollars – almost one-third of the party’s total fundraising in a single donation – as Premier Alison Redford’s cash-strapped campaign was staring down defeat at the ballot box in the spring election. Documents made public by Elections Alberta on Wednesday record $300,000 in donations from Mr. Katz, his company, his family and business associates.
But a source close to the campaign told The Globe and Mail that Mr. Katz provided a cheque for $430,000 to the PCs, a donation that was broken up into smaller pieces.
The maximum allowable donation to a political party in Alberta from an individual person or company during an election campaign is $30,000. Elections Alberta said splitting donations is allowed in some circumstances.
Mr. Katz declined requests for comment.

The statements show that despite the fundraising disparity, the PCs outspent all the other parties combined, running up a $3 million deficit to fend off the Wildrose and win their 12th consecutive election. The Wildrose spent a little less than they earned, ending with a small surplus of about $29,000.

Why? they would have been terrible to lead this province. That plus i'm sure Redford would have won anyways without that donation.

That has more to do with the Edmonton city council than Redford and her party.

He was probably buying their support for provincial funding for a new arena.

$430,000 doesn't even pay for the arena's parking lot

Had an idea!

Can we not turn this issue into which party is better, and ignore the issue at hand, which is that a single individual apparently gave a political party in Alberta $400,000 more than he was allowed too.
Unless I'm missing something.

Actually I think the issue is that Redford and her party accepted $400,000 more than they were supposed to, from a single individual.

hahahaha oops, I was thinking larger
anyways it is still way more than appropriate for one person to donate, unless he could prove that each person chipping in put up $30000 or less, which I doubt

Did they? I don't know the election rules in Alberta, but it seems as though the donations could have come from a variety of sources to break it into allowable amounts.

I find this odd considering the PC governments drug reform has likely cost his pharmacy business 10's of millions. Unless the opposition's plans were eorse

This is a fine example of walking a very thin line on the legal aspect.
The limit per person or corporation is $30,000.00. So one could "gift" 30K to each of their children and they in turn donate; or a Corp can pay dividends and employees donate in their own names.
Laws broken; no. Morally questionable; yes.
In the Katz case, as I understand it, it was one cheque.... which should raise eyebrows, questions and alarm bells.
