No cap space, and we have enough "depth" players. I kind of hope they trade Wideman just so we can have actualy FA discussions, but we'd be trading him at a low.
Lets save room for the 2017 free agency. We can then go for quality.

The top UFAs will be looking at Kesler's $ and term
Backes has reportedly turned down 4 years, $6M per
Pipe dream to think anyone worth having will sign a reasonable deal

Believe we would be best served by going to a team that is cap stressed and make a deal with them vs playing in the free agent market.
Teams like LA, Minny, NYR and Washington have some tough decisions to make this off season. It could involve us dumping a bad contract for another bad contract with term left, or picks/prospects for a rfa that a team can't afford to re sign.
Only way we should be in the ufa market is to pick up someone who has been passed over and will accept a cheap one year deal that we can flip at the deadline.

Backes is a risky proposition in my opinion. A 32 year old guy who plays a physical style and is already pretty worn down - I'd pass. That's a contract some team is going to regret offering in the future.

Would love to land Lucic but it seems doubtful. If I was him I probably wouldn't leave LA to come to Calgary.

Backes would be my only preference in that group, but I'm not willing to give him the term he's probably expecting.

I think Perron would compliment the top line very well. He's young enough that he will still make an impact when we are contending. Should be able to fit him in the cap(maybe not).

Flames might be one of those teams unless BT can get rid of burden contracts. He does not have a lot of scratch to play with.

Okposo!
He would be a nice addition with Mony and Johnny. I've watched a fair amount of Islander games and he has a knack for scoring.

Don't need any bottom 6 wingers. Bouma, Ferland, Bollig, Jooris, Hathaway and perhaps Porier. They need to focus on the top 6 where all we really have is Frolik, Colborne and ideally they play third line with Backlund.
I would prefer trading for some wingers to play with Bennett and Monahan/Gaudreau

Just because we have lots of bottom six wingers doesn't mean BT can't upgrade them. Flames should be looking to improve everywhere they can.
Matt Martin would be an improvement on every bottom six winger you just listed. He's got Bollig's size, Jooris' skating, Bouma's forechecking, Hathaway's peskiness all combined with 2015 playoff Ferland's physicality. Plus he's usually good for 5-10 goals and 15-20 points with just 4th line ice time.
He's pretty much the perfect 4th liner, and if the Flames can get him at $1-1.5 million they should do it.

Draft a forward at 6th. This team is going to be too tight up against the cap to overpay a complimentary winger.

Okposo, Lucic, Martin.
Those three would be my targets with Martin being the most realistic and the other two pipe dreams.

It would never happen but obviously getting Lucic would be the dream. Playing him with Johnny & Mony would be one of the best lines in Hockey and offer some protection for those two. He could become Johnnys personal bodyguard lol

We don't really have any horribad contracts after this season. Only ones I would quantify as bad as follows
Stajan
Raymond
Smid
Wideman
Engelland
we could buy all but Stajan out as they are expiring deals and have room to add. But I don't see that as necessary for all of them. Any of these shorter term contracts could be sent to a team looking to get out of longer term financial obligation (LA, Minnesota or NYR). Any cap stress we appear to have is short lived given the money that comes off the books this year and next. Excluding Stajan, $14.75m comes off the books at the end of 2017 season, if nothing changes from now to that time.

I am hopeful for another impact player with #6. Someone that can crack the 2016/7 roster.
They will get a great kid, and there are lots of guys on this team that a confident kid could bump down the roster.
