Round robin top 2 move on, and have a best of 3 final. Ya it is a lot of hockey but it would be a way more interesting tournament.

Junior A teams would get crushed.

I think if I was Brandon and lost to Red Deer after defeating them earlier I'd be pretty upset.
I'm thinking how I would have felt if in 2004 the Flames beat Tampa but then lost in the fifth round to San Jose.

I think it's good the way it is. By naming the host city in advance you give that franchise the ability to prepare their team in advance and, in theory, be competitive. And as mentioned, this way you don't run the risk of a city having to host by virtue of winning their league that really doesn't have the capability of properly doing it.
I think given all the parameters, it's good as is.
|
It's actually part of the selection process that the bidders show they are building or have a team that is expected to be a contender by the time the tournament happens.
Most teams with the bye go all out on 19 yr olds, and give up the next couple of years so it's a tradeoff.
I personnaly have no issue with the format, These teams have already won their league, what's wrong with a tournament of champions with the host team included.
This tourney would sell jack for tickets if the home team wasn't involved.

The SCF wasn't named in honour of Canadian soldiers (OHL players originally) who died in the war.
Respect their sacrifice.

red deer is a good team - it is not like they won 10 games this year. wasn't it about a decade or so ago that the teams from the Q struggled to win a game or two at this tournment
this is a difficult championship to win as there are what 70 or so teams in the CHL and then you add intot eh mix that you only have 4 yrs as a player to compete for it.
while it would be nice to have multi-game series, I think it is logistically difficult

That happened in 2007. Medicine Hat and Vancouver played each other in the WHL Final. The Tigers won in 7 games. Vancouver was hosting the Memorial Cup that year, so both teams went to the Tournament. Medicine Hat won their game in the round robin 1-0. They met again in the Tournament final, which Vancouver won.
The two teams played each other 9 times in a little over 3 weeks and Medicine Hat won 5 of the 9 games, but the Giants were Memorial Cup Champs.
That's the nature of the beast for these types of tournaments.

No, they absolutely would. The leagues are not even comparable. Same goes for the USHL idea. That league is getting better talent these days, but it's still more comparable to junior A then to the CHL

Wow really? College hockey has considerably older players. I think predicting the best college team composed mostly of players in their 20's would be @#$# kicked by mostly 16-19 year olds is questionable. The college team might be the easy favourite in fact.

Hey, you might be correct, but I think the talent level in the CHL is greater than the talent level in the NCAA.
It sure as #### would be interesting to watch. I think saying "easy favourite" is a bit much, but then again I did say "#### kicked".

Love the Memorial Cup. Hopefully Sportsnet is streaming the games again.
Put me in the slightly overrated camp though. The fact that the host team gets an automatic spot and the games are single elimination makes it less meaningful to me. Winning four best of sevens to win your league is a greater accomplishment. I'm possibly still bitter over the 1999 cup...

First is the round robin than it goes to single elimination. Yeah we were the best team in 99 but for the dirty elbow to Stuart.

For the Knights, #4 - Olli Juolevi and #7 - Matthew Tkachuk are both high-ranked Draft-eligible players who could be on the Flames' radar for 6th overall at the Draft.
Anyone else to keep an eye on?

LW Max Jones #49- chance he could fall to the 2nd round or someone the Flames trade up/down to get. His playing style is similar to 2015 playoff Ferland.
C/RW Cliff Pu #63 - ranked in the late 1st by some, 2nd rounder by others

London leads 2-0 late in the first. Juolevi and Tkachuk with the primary assists on the two goals.
