Default The Next Flames Coach | News & Rumors

There's a couple threads out there that deal with the firing of Hartley and who everyone wants as the next coach, but there's no thread dedicated to any news or rumors about the coaching search so I figured I would start one.

Here's what we have so far:

General:

Bob McKenzie Verified account ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

I'm not as convinced that prerequisite is absolutely essential in CGY, that Flames may, and I say may, be more open to 1st time NHL HC.

May 6:
Friedman on 960 morning show: http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/boomer-m...-morning-show/
  • Talk about John Stevens as a potential candidate
  • Wouldn't be surprised if Travis Green and/or Geoff Ward are interviewed for the Calgary job
  • Calgary is looking more for presence rather than experience
  • Friedman says Boudreau would love to be in Ottawa and Sens would love him, has family there
  • Also Boomer has said that Dater's report of an offer on Boudreau's table from the Flames is not true.

Boudreau:

Flames making big pitch for Boudreau. Offer already on table

4h4 hours ago Minnesota Wild real hot after Boudreau too, probably more than Flames. Might come down to who offers most money/term

4h4 hours ago
Minnesota hoping for a quick decision from Boudreau. Doesn't want to get into big bidding war

2h2 hours ago
I don't think Boudreau will wind up in Calgary though
May 6:

Carlyle:

With Bob Hartley gone, expect Randy Carlyle to be one of the candidates for the vacant job in Calgary. #flames #tvasports

Dineen:

Calling around and keep hearing the name Kevin Dineen as a strong candidate for #nhlflames gig

Travis Green:

I think I'm on the Dineen bandwagon if it isn't Boudreau. Guy has had success everywhere he's coached and his time under Quenneville will only make him better.

Dineen coached in the Hockey Canada U18 program while Brad Pascall was there.

I do think his time in Chicago has helped him develop as a coach. He be a solid option if things with Boudreau don't work out.

Dineen might have some more untapped raw skill as coach, yet the players would respect his winning background and experience.

The point of this thread is to collect news and rumours. It'd be nice if people kept other commentary in the other threads.

Also, Anaheim's farm team when Burke was with the Ducks.

I don't know if I put BB into the category of a coach who employs truculent teams.

National women's team as well.

Dineen is an interesting one with his time with Chicago. Travis Green would be fun just because it would screw with Vancouver.

I'm also in the 'I would rather not have Carlyle' camp.

Dineen reminds me a little of Playfair.
Promising young coach: check
Short tenure in first head coaching gig: check
First season as a head coach, gets his team to the playoffs: check
Has disappointing first round exit in the playoffs: check
Is subsequently fired/demoted: check
Has good success as an associate coach: check

Playfair strikes me as a guy that is great in a support role, but doesn't have the cajones to be the main guy in the NHL pressure cooker. I'm not saying Dineen is the same, but he does remind me of Playfair a little.

I think Boomer mentioned that Hartley has an interview with Ottawa. I haven't seen this anywhere else. Others are saying Hartley likely won't be hired in Ottawa. According to their owner, Ottawa is down to their "final list".

It would be nice if Ottawa chose someone sooner rather than later, so the competition for coaches could be a little thinner.

Playfair barely got into the playoffs with a 28 year old Iginla, prime Regehr, Dion, Hamrlik, and Miikka Kiprusoff coming off a Vezina winning season.

Kevin Dineen's top line in Florida was Fleischman, Weiss and Versteeg. The best D on the team was Brian Campbell. His goalie was 36 year old Jose Theodore. And he won the division.

The playfair comparison seems like a bit of a reach.

Any possibility that more than one of these guys gets hired?

One had a head coach, and the other as an associate coach or something?

Duha on the Fan this morning mentioned Playfair, Lowry and Ralph Krueger as possible "darkhorse" options that aren't being discussed already.

I think there's a reason they aren't being discussed.

Is Krueger still chairman of the Southampton football club? Because that is a pretty sweet gig and likely pays more than being an NHL coach does.

Not sure if he would have to resign to take the job, but I wonder if the motivation would be there.

Personally, I hope not. Treliving should hire the head coach and the HC should have autonomy to hire his staff. If that includes an associate coach from the list of other candidates, fine. If that means that Gelinas, Singlet etc are turfed in favour of other coaches, fine.

I would love to see some like Sarchy come in as an assistant coach. He seems like someone who would be a good leader in that capacity.
