It is probably closer then some are giving them credit for.

Eichel had 45 points in 24 games in the USHL during his pre-draft season.

Matthews had 48 points in 24 games in the USHL during his pre-draft season.

I honestly think that if those two kids weren't American, they would be getting just as much hype and accord as McDavid did as a "generational talent"

Will be interesting to see what Matthews does over a full season in the Swiss league, with no real rookie comparison.

I guess the most recent comparisons will be NHLers playing there during the 2012 lockout:

  • Seguin put up 40 points in 29 games the year after having a 67 point NHL season.
  • Bergeron had 29 points in 21 games
  • Zetterberg had 32 points in 23 games
  • Tavares put up 42 points in 28 games
So pretty good numbers from some NHLers who were already established stars in their prime. If Matthews can stay close to or even above a PPG that would be pretty amazing for a kid before his draft year.

So, any WHL prospects I should keep an eye on and try to catch when they're in Lethbridge?

Defensemen Kale Clague (Brandon) and Jake Bean (Calgary) as well. Overall seems like a weak WHL class though.

He showed a few flashes on sunday. But I thought he was kind of disappointing.

The early rankings seem to indicate this draft will be deep for wingers and D in the first round. Not such a good year for Cs.

"He's smart, competitive and he's nasty," former Calgary Flames general manager Craig Button told USA TODAY Sports recently. "He can make plays as well as score. He can score multiple ways."
Quote:
"He's not a 225-pound player, but he has some of the traits his father had," said former NHL coach Ron Wilson who will coach USA at the upcoming World Junior Championships.
Quote:
But young Tkachuk is 6-1, and a solidly-packed 200 pounds. "He has a great down-low game, net presence and excellent hockey sense. He's an absolute competitor," said Jim Johannson, who oversees USA Hockey's national teams.
Quote:
Dan Marr, the NHL's head of Central Scouting, said the comparison of Matthew to his father is appropriate. "I think the results will be the same," Marr said. "Just a little bit different style."

Surprised to see Puljujarvi drop. He was the consensus #2.

this year is more 2012 than 2013/14/15 with the exception of Matthews. Not overly impressed with this year's batch of players compared to previous seasons. It is early though and things can change. If the Flames are a playoff team at the deadline, this might be a year that it would make some sense to use the pick to get a player at the deadline (it would have to be the right guy though).

I disagree with the draft looking weak.

Jakob Chychrun looks great and has top pair potential.
Jake Bean in Calgary has looked great so far.
Patrick Laine has been getting positive reviews.

There is some talent to be had, as always it depends on how the teams helps the prospect develop afterwards and what opportunity they get. There's about 10 guys i'm very excited about in no order.
Matthews
Chychrun
Bean
Laine
Puljujarvi
Brown
Nylander
Tkachuk
Jones
Sokolov

Big wingers and d-men at the top of this draft? Perfect for if our season continues to sputter.

There wasn't the top end prospect in 2012 but in the first round only a couple of players haven't played in the NHL and over half have become regulars, so it was a pretty good draft in my eyes.
