I agree, but I like the sense of urgency from a player like Gaudreau. There's no taking for granted that they've got like 8-10 years to get it done. The time is now.
Pretty deep into the offseason to hear the words 'sense of urgency'..
The pessimist in me looks at a comment like that and thinks that Gaudreau is committed to this team for only another three years. If they don't make any noise between now and then, he'll likely look elsewhere in free agency.

The Foo thing and already being here skating are big things for me. Now it'll be interesting to see which Oiler fan is the first to poo all over this (Oil Stain or Weitz?) but this is a positive step for Gaudreau.
Last season and last training camp was such a disaster for the Flames. Gaudreau hold out, Monahan injured, Versteeg not signed until late. That's the entire first line in game one who didn't skate together once before it. The D pairings were such a mess, that's on Gulutzen but he really wanted to ween off Brodie-Giordano and it sucked but it's paying off now. Our D pairings are already set.
Obviously there will be new and interesting challenges but this team should be able to hit the ground running this year, and not need several weeks to get things together.
I think Treliving recognized just how much of a negative impact the Brodie-Wideman pairing had on the team. I think it would take an absolute disaster in goaltending for the Flames to do any worse next season. Last year all the worst case scenarios came true and they still made the playoffs with some mid-season tweaks. It can't possibly go any worse

Granted, a lot of best case scenarios came true too. Not often you see a team win 10 games in a row...and Elliott had a big part to do with our resurgence since January.

We are only one year removed from that exact thing happening to this organization. I don't think the new duo will be that bad but it's not a given they will be an improvement over last years goaltenders. Team should be better than last season but as always injuries could derail things.
As long as they can avoid the Ducks in the playoffs...
I personally would relish the opportunity for the Flames to go back to Anaheim in the post season. They will have to get over the hump eventually; why not this year?

Never mind that your reading is just not supported by the quote at all, you know he's signed longer than that, right?
to me it is likely not a stretch to say that perhaps johnny was frustrated at the start of last year with how the contract went and then missing camp and adjusting to Gullie system and expectations.
johnny is a year older, more mature and has more cash on him, so it would make sense his mind is a little more clear and he is more engaged

I would agree with this. It really seems like Gaudreau is beginning to become a better leader and a great ambassador to the city and team.
He was here for the stampede parade, he was part of the team in recruiting Foo, he has been making contact both privately and publicly with new team members.
I'm predicting a huge year for Johnny.
After reading this, I can't help thinking that we have Johnny helped recruiting Foo and Oilers have Justin talking to Spencer to think long and hard on joining the Oilers cos he, himself regretted doing it.
It's good to hear that the group they got for the next 3 years recognizes that they have a real chance to accomplish something if they get themselves together. Beyond that, who knows? 3 years is a long time the NHL, it really isn't practical to look beyond that given the situation they are in.
I think three years is the focus as it corresponds with the next lockout.
Spoiler!
